Genesis 1:1: "In the beginning God Created the heavens and the earth." On October 13, 1957, Michael Lucious McKnight was born on earth to Andrew McKnight and Georgia (Ellison) McKnight in San Antonio, Texas. He gained his wings to heaven on April 14, 2025. He accepted Jesus Christ as his Savior, professing his faith at Mt. Zion First Baptist Church.
Affectionately known as "Chop" by family and friends, Michael attended Cuney Elementary School, Page Middle School, and graduated from Phillis Wheatley High School. He furthered his education at St. Philip's College. Throughout his life, Michael demonstrated a strong work ethic, beginning with roles at Handy Andy Grocery Store and Parks and Recreation. He later found his true calling as a Gym and Special Education official with SAISD, where he proudly served and mentored countless students until his retirement in 2019.
Michael found great joy in life's simple pleasures - playing dominoes, barbecuing, raising hogs, and spending time out in the country with his father and lifelong friends. A devoted fan of the Los Angeles Lakers, he was often seen proudly wearing his favorite colors, purple and gold. His smile, warmth, wit, and wisdom left a lasting impression on everyone who had the blessing of knowing him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Andrew and Georgia McKnight, and his siblings Andrew McKnight Jr., Patricia McKnight, and Gladys (McKnight) Simmons.
Michael's memory will be cherished by his loving sister, Eunice (McKnight) Cunningham; his uncle, John Ellison (Patricia); and his faithful companion of 36 years, Cynthia Smith White. He also leaves behind Cynthia's daughters, Morjoriee White and Monica White, and her mother, Mattie Amos Brewer, to whom Michael was a loyal attendant and caregiver. His bonus brothers, Tony Wilkinson, Julius Bowens Jr., Dale McKnight, and James Ellison.
Michael will forever live in our hearts, remembered for his kind heart, quiet spirit, unwavering strength, and steadfast love for family, friends, and community. His legacy of loyalty and compassion will continue to inspire all who knew him.
"The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever." - Psalm 23
