Michael H. "Mike" Mickens

Michael "Mike" Henry Mickens, 76 years, of Toledo, OH passed away on Monday, February 9, 2026 in Cleveland, OH. The son of Gerald and Arla (Ackerman) Mickens, he was born on October 22, 1949 in Toledo, OH.

A 1968 graduate of Whitmer High School, Michael was a Vietnam War Veteran serving in the United States Army 1 st Air Calvary Division. He retired from the Ford Motor Company as a Tool and Die Maker. Mike worked as a groundskeeper for 17 years at the Detwiler Golf Course. He roller skated with the Ohio State Amateur roller-skating association from 1964-1968.

Mike was a loving husband to Shirley, an extraordinary father, grandfather otherwise known as "Poppy" and a great-grandfather. He enjoyed golfing, riding his Harley motorcycle, woodworking, annual snowbird trips to Florida, boating and working on mechanical projects. Mike was a grill master at cooking briskets during the holidays. He enjoyed spending time at the ORYC (a 40-year member) with his many friends and golf buddies. Mike was a wonderful and loving man, so full of knowledge and wisdom, we all learned so much from him. He was the first one to offer his help and the last to leave the worksite.

Michael was an active member of the Ottawa River Yacht Club and Golf League, Florida Bamboo Garden Golf League, American Legion Post 273, VFW Post 606, NRA and the Sandusky County Sportsman Club.

Michael is survived by his loving wife, Shirley; son, Jon (Carrie) Dellabona and daughter, Tina (Dave) Bachmayer; grandchildren, Christopher, Katelyn (Ross), Kristen (Matt), Andrea, Dustin (MaRenna), Brandon and 7 beautiful great-children; sister, Darcy (Jeff) Ulrich and brother-in-law, Jim Grochowski.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Debbie Grochowski and brother, Gary Mickens.

A memorial gathering will be held on Saturday, February 28, 2026 from 11:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. in the Urbanski's Bedford Funeral Chapel 8300 Lewis Ave., Temperance, MI where a memorial service will be at 1:30 p.m. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Cincinnati Children's Hospital.
