Michael Donald "Mike" Burns, age 81, of Jefferson City, Missouri, passed away peacefully on July 28, 2025, at his home.

He was born on June 15, 1944, in Marshalltown, Iowa, to Wallace Donald and Mavis Jane (Helvick) Burns. In 1958, the Burns family moved to Jefferson City, where Mike attended Jefferson City High School and graduated with the class of 1962.

Following high school, Mike served proudly in the United States Marine Corps. He lived for a short time in California, and after returning to Jefferson City, he was united in marriage to Carol Jean Maddox on June 6, 1969. They began a journey that would span 56 years of love, commitment, and dedication.

Mike then operated Burns Optical alongside his father until 2022, carrying on a proud family tradition and serving the community for over 50 years.

Mike was deeply committed to his community, both as a business owner and citizen. He was a longtime member of the Cosmopolitan Club and many other local organizations, such as The Elks, American Legion, and Masons. He believed firmly in service and giving back, values he carried throughout his life.

In his personal life, Mike was an avid golfer and league bowler for many years. He was a passionate collector of a variety of things and a lifelong St. Louis Cardinals fan. He also found a niche for cooking and enjoyed experimenting with different cuisines, making family dinners memorable.

Music was a constant presence in Mike's life. He had a deep appreciation for a wide array of artists throughout his life. He loved to sing, with his bass voice, and some of his daughters' favorite memories are singing along with him in the car.

Mike was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He enjoyed traveling with his wife, Carol, finding joy in simply being together. He was patient, kind, and supportive – always providing an encouraging word, steady presence, and strong foundation for his family to rely on. The love he had for his family was unconditional, both felt and seen through his words and actions.

Mike will be remembered for his warm heart, unwavering dedication, sense of humor, and the lasting impact he made on everyone who knew him.

He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Carol (Maddox) Burns; daughters, Tiffany Baker (John) and Dana Bauridl (Kipp); and four grandchildren, Kameron Bauridl, Damen Bauridl, Brogan Baker, and Brynn Baker.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Wallace and Mavis, and his sister, Judy Biesemeyer.

A celebration of life will be announced at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude’s Place, Memphis, TN, 38105.

Funeral arrangements are under the care of Freeman Mortuary, 915 Madison St, Jefferson City, MO 65101.

Hugs and happy thoughts to your family. Mike was one of my dad's besties, and they had decades of laughter, travel and memory making. Glad he's at peace and no longer has to suffer with cancer. Love to you all.
