Mike Montgomery, longtime banker (25 years) and substitute schoolteacher (15 years), passed away Tuesday, October 8, 2024. He lived life as it was presented to him, typically trying to get past negative obstacles and focusing forward with positivity.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Suzanne; his daughter, Sally Suzanne Portch; his “favorite son-in-law” Matthew Portch; his brother, Jim Montgomery; his brother-in-law, Kenneth Drost; and his nieces, Melanie McDearmon, Debra Guthrie, and Diane Maiwald and families. He always considered his family to be the high point of his life.
Mike had a number of honors during his lifetime. Achievements he considered most important: Vice-president and Trust Officer at Amarillo National Bank (1972-1980); Chairman of the Administrative Board of Polk Street Methodist Church (1980); Officer of the Year, Plano Bank & Trust, Plano, TX, 1995; Substitute Teacher of the Year, Academy Del Sol, Alamogordo, NM, 2006. He was a graduate of Texas Tech University and a member of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity.
Mike was blessed with many friends throughout his years. He said to all of them: Godspeed!
Although his brother had some rather more adventurous hobbies, he and Jim shared similar interests and were close. The family was fortunate to be able to take many trips: sightseeing, sports, and fishing. Mike, Sally, and Matt would fish, and Suzanne would read a book. There were also music trips during the years that Sally played the violin. These helped bring the family closer together since they were away from the daily routine. Additionally, he accepted Matt’s stock-research challenges and enjoyed finding ways to invest accordingly. Mike’s family was his pride and joy.
Visitation will be from 1-2:00 PM, Wednesday, October 16, 2024 at Boxwell Brothers, 2800 Paramount. Graveside service will follow at 2:30 PM, at Llano Cemetery. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.
