Michael Jay Morrison

Michael Jay Morrison "Mike" passed away on December 24th, 2025, at the age of 59. Mike is preceded in death by his father, Luther "Mac" Morrison; he is survived by his mother, Dorothy (Hutson) Morrison, son, Kelly Morrison, daughter, Katie Morrison, sister, Mila Morrison, granddaughter, Kimberlyn Morrison, and a host of many other family and friends.

Mike was born and raised in Baytown, Texas, where he graduated from Robert E. Lee High School in the class of 1984. He grew up playing basketball, football, baseball, and was in the Baytown Boys Choir. In high school he was in the Baptist All State Youth Choir, played basketball, and competed on debate teams. He also played cornet, trumpet, and baritone in the concert and marching bands, played guitar in jazz band, and was the student conductor his senior year. Following high school, Mike attended San Jacinto College where he continued his passion for music. He played guitar and bass with numerous bands and venues and was sought after before he was old enough for the venues that pursued his talent. Although he loved Jazz, his repertoire of genres was vast. Mike loved where music took him; he worked with Ray Price, Willie Nelson, La Mafia, Kathy Taylor, Kim Burrell, Kirk Whalum Mark Chestnut, Anita Baker, Johnny Lee, Bryan Duncan, Harvest, Caedmon's Call, and many others.

As an engineer he worked on hundreds of sessions including Grammy winners La Mafia, Kirk Whalum, Regina Belle, Jimmy Haslip, and Warren Sneed. Mike traveled across the States, Europe and South Africa, and played for two presidents. He was known in Houston as having "the best ears in the business."

Mike also loved gardening, deep sea fishing, watching sports, and German Shepherd Dogs. He was part of a GSD training and breeding community across the country which follows the standard of training commands in German.

Above all the blessings and gifts in Mike's life was his relationship with his Creator and Savior Jesus Christ. Mike understood where his gifts, blessings, and salvation came from. And he wasn't shy about sharing it.

Mike made friends anywhere he went, and was a caring, compassionate friend. He genuinely wanted to know people deeply and never settled for shallow conversation. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Funeral services for Mike will be held at Clayton Funeral Home of La Porte on Monday, January 5th, 2026. His family will receive guests during a visitation from 10:00 to 11:00 am, with the service commencing at 11:00 am. Interment will follow at Grandview Memorial Park in Pasadena, Texas.
