Michael Francis Naegele, beloved brother, uncle, friend, and dedicated servant of his country, passed away peacefully on April 9, 2025, at Liza's Place in
Wheeling, West Virginia, at the age of 78. Born on August 8, 1946, in Wheeling, Michael lived a Christian life marked by dedication, generosity, and love.
He was a Retired Master Chief in the United States Navy, serving his nation with distinction for 23 years, including courageous duty during the Vietnam War. His military service was a testament to his unwavering commitment and steadfast character.
A man of diverse passions, Michael found joy in the simple pleasures of life. He was an avid golfer who delighted in the tranquility of the greens. Michael loved animals and had a particular fondness for greyhound racing, often spending time at the Wheeling Island Hotel-Casino-Racetrack playing the slot machines. His love for Christmas was legendary among family and friends; he was well-known for his meticulous gift wrapping, adding a personal touch that made each present extra-special.
Michael was a dedicated uncle whose boundless enthusiasm for the activities of his nieces and nephews brought him immense joy. He celebrated their achievements as if they were his own and cherished every moment spent with them. Michael's heart knew no bounds, extending kindness and compassion to all, especially members of marginalized cultural groups, whom he befriended and supported throughout his life.
A devout Catholic, Michael was a valued member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, where his faith was a guiding force. His generous spirit and loving nature left a lasting impact on everyone he met.
Preceded in death by his parents, Raymond J. Naegele, Sr., and Blanche T. (Stenger) Naegele. Michael had an unyielding dedication to his mother with whom he lived with and cared for in her home for several years until her death at age 98 in 2016.
Michael is survived by his brothers, Raymond (Betty) Naegele of
Wheeling, WV and Father Gary Naegele of Morgantown, WV; his sister, Lisa Naegele (Bill Sisson) of Proctor, WV; and his beloved nieces and nephews: Dawn Renshaw, Nicole Naegele, Steven (Heather) Naegele, and Aaron (Jessica) Naegele. He also leaves behind great-nieces Katrina Naegele, Amelia and Addie Sisson, great-nephews Jacob Sisson and Nolan Naegele, and dear friends Karyl and Chris Perko, Bonna Reed, and Chuck and Ela Tinkham.
Family and friends will gather to celebrate Michael's life and honor his memory. Visitation will be held on Sunday, April 13, 2025, from 4:00 pm until the Vigil Service at 6:00 pm at Altmeyer Funeral Homes, Elm Grove Chapel, 154 Kruger St., Wheeling. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Monday, April 14, at 10:00 am at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church. Michael will be laid to rest with military honors at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery, San Diego, CA, at a later date.
