O'Brien, a dedicated Iron Worker and esteemed welder, passed away on February 15, 2026, in Indianapolis, where he was born on November 29, 1943. He leaves behind a legacy of hard work, family devotion, and cherished memories that will endure in the hearts of those who knew him.
With over 50 years of experience in his trade, Michael was a testament to resilience and skill. His career as an Iron Worker and a Diver which showcased his commitment to craftsmanship, as he worked diligently in a profession that required not only physical strength but also precision and determination. He often spoke of the pride he felt in his work, a sentiment that mirrored his overall approach to life.
Michael's military service in the United States Army marked a significant chapter in his life. While stationed in Germany, he met his soulmate, Ingrid, beginning a beautiful journey together that would span over six decades. Their love was rooted in companionship and shared experiences, and he often reflected on those early days with great fondness.
Outside of his professional and military endeavors, Michael had a rich tapestry of interests. He was an avid horseman, cherished the times spent hunting, and enjoyed riding motorcycles, particularly Harley-Davidson bikes, until he could no longer do so.
Michael is survived by his daughters, Evelyn Strader and Sheryl Brooks, alongside his beloved grandchildren, Michael and Ingrid, and great-grandchild, Abel. His niece Julia. He is also mourned by his sister-in-law, Kathelyn O'Brien, and dear friends, Linda Hargus and Thomas Kovacs. Their lives were deeply enriched by his warmth, humor, and steadfast support.
Michael's legacy is also honored by those who preceded him in death, including his loving wife, Ingrid O'Brien; his parents, John and Gladys O'Brien; his daughter, Michelle O'Brien; his son, Michael Shawn O'Brien; and his brothers, Tom and Bob O'Brien.
A visitation will take place at Flanner Buchanan-Memorial Park, located at 9350 E Washington St, Indianapolis, IN 46229, on March 13, 2026, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM, and again on March 14, from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM. A Funeral Service will follow on March 14, starting at 2:00 PM.
Michael L. O'Brien will be remembered not only for his skills and achievements but also for the enduring love he shared with his family and friends. His strong spirit and passion for life will continue to inspire those he leaves behind.
