THOMAS O'BRIEN Obituary

O'BRIEN, Thomas Age 86, of Amherst, Massachusetts, passed away on February 14, 2026, at the Fisher Home in Amherst. Tom grew up in Medford, Massachusetts, where, like everyone in the family, he worked in his father Harry's men's clothing store. Tom was reading Business Week in middle school and excelled at all things academic, earning his undergraduate degree from Tufts University and later his Ph.D. in Econometrics from Cornell. He was a Submariner serving as an officer in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Irex and USS Abraham Lincoln, where he was during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He was happy to serve and happy to leave, long after he could remember little else, Tom could tell you exactly how long he served in the Navy: "two years, two months, and nineteen days". Tom was a White House Fellow during the Nixon Administration, helped lead the Boston Redevelopment Authority, spent years at Harvard University, and became Dean of the Isenberg School of Management at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. But the resume, as impressive as it was, isn't what we remember. Tom was a leader in every role he ever held. But when you spoke to him, you immediately forgot his title and how much smarter he was than you, because he listened so intently, like whatever you were saying actually made sense. He was a mentor to many, and there are so many of us whose lives changed dramatically as a result of Tom O'Brien's mentorship. That said, when he had heard enough, Tom was known to just walk away, walk people out of the office, or at home suggest that we should "Get out of my kitchen!" Playing bridge with Tom was uniquely painful. He knew what you had and would grow impatient waiting for you to figure it out, by then he had assigned all the tricks and was shuffling for the next hand. Tom was sober for more than 30 years. He was a walker. Every day, rain or shine. All over the UMass campus with Dean, his beloved chocolate lab (Dean's Dean), bragging about how close Dean stayed at heel, right up until Dean would bolt to a dumpster a couple hundred yards away. In later years, everyone in town recognized Tom on his daily walk down University Avenue in his cowboy hat to the bike path. Tom gave generously to the things that moved him. He was a longtime board member of the Becket YMCA. After meeting Sam Berns, a boy with Progeria, Tom went all in on fundraising for Progeria research. And well into his years with dementia, he helped raise funds for the expansion of the emergency department at Cooley Dickinson Hospital. His favorite question was "What's next?" Tom reconnected with Gena, his high school sweetheart, and married in January 1996. She passed in 2008. He is survived by his sons, Pete and Rob O'Brien; his stepsons, Jay and Michael Leonard; his daughters-in-law, Diane and Stephanie O'Brien and Chris, Terri and Julie Leonard; his grandchildren, Maureen, Luke, Matt, Tim, Ben, Jack, Daniel, Molly, James, Shannon and Kiera; his great-grandchildren, Lincoln, Angeline, and Oaklynn; his longtime traveling companion, Louise Bray; and Archibald S. Holbroke. He was predeceased by his wife, Gena; his son, David O'Brien; his stepson, Steven Leonard; his sister, Jean; and his brothers, Harry and Dick. He held many titles: Dr., Dean, Board Member, White House Fellow, Officer. None mattered to him more than Grandpa and Buddy. Service later this spring at Isenberg, date TBD. Yesterday

I met Tom every morning for almost twenty years with all the others in the coffee gang. Tom was certainly the intellectual muscle amongst us, and always ready with stories about his service as a Submariner, his relationships with famous folks in politics and academia. He was a gentle giant, with kind words for everyone. Tom was a model of gentility and humility for me, and I cherish every minute that I stood in his presence. He will live in my heart always.

Yesterday

Tom was loved and loved everyone around him. When I asked Jay Leonard about his status during the last few days of his life the answer was that
Tom smiled when Jay said, "I love you ", and Tom said "I love you too "!

Gratefully, Ted McCarthy
