Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina
Mr. Michael Bernard Scott, 69, of Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina, son of the late Zollie and Annie Webb Scott, was born on September 16, 1955 in Halifax County, North Carolina. He departed this earthly life on Sunday, January 26, 2025 at home with his longtime friends and caregivers of 25 years, Samuel and Terry Taylor. A die-hard Washington Commanders fan, Michael was preparing to watch his team play against the Philadelphia Eagles, when the Almighty God saw in His infinite wisdom to grant Michael his heavenly wings.
Michael attended John Armstrong Chaloner School until schools were integrated and he had to attend Roanoke Rapids City Schools. He later took courses in Landscaping at Halifax Community College and secured a job with Putney Constructions. Michael worked many places throughout his life, but he enjoyed this job the most as he got to work with all his friends. However, he wouldn't let you forget that he was a Lifeguard at Chaloner Pool and saved someone's life.
A very artistic and creative individual, Michael could draw anything. Many of his drawings were from his elaborate and creative mind. He utilized his drawing and painting skills on the walls of his parents and other people's homes. Because no one readily recognized the brilliant and creative mind that Michael possessed, many of his God-given talents and abilities went un-noticed. Michael knew how to put a smile on anyone's face and could make the saddest person laugh. There was never a dull moment in his presence. If you needed an off the cuff rap lyric or a witty rhyme, Michael was like his Dad and uncle before him and would drop you a riff with the drop of a dime. And, if he really, really liked you, he would give you a nickname: ask "Little Black Boy", "Little Colored Boy", "Sweet Pea", "Sammie/Faz", or "Lady T".
Michael loved his biological family, but he was blessed to have a bonus/second family that took care of him and loved him as their own. He loved art and music, but most of all, his beloved "Redskins" turned "Commanders"; so much so, that his prosthetic leg bore the Redskin emblem.
In addition to his parents, Michael, known as "Pus" to many, was preceded in death by three sisters: Catherine Hawkins, Doris Ann Jones, and Lizzie Mae Robinson; one brother: Earl Scott, Sr.; nephews: Jimmie Jones, Cecil Jones, Jr., Joseph Jones, Carl "Mat" Scott, and Earl Scott, Jr.; great-niece: Venyetta Jones; great-nephew: Trévis Hawkins; his 2nd Mom: Joanne Smith; and his good friends: Elroy Sledge and Allen Sledge.
He leaves to cherish many great memories, two daughters: Carleen Powell (Mac) of Emporia, VA and Latasha Webb (Travis) of Roanoke Rapids, NC; three grandchildren: Deshawn Cain of Colorado Springs, CO and Treshawn Cain of Emporia, VA and Mackinley Powell of Emporia, VA; a soon to be great-grandchild, May 2025; one sister: Linda Kay Sneed (Jonas) of Littleton, NC; two brothers: Ray Scott (Nancy) and Carl Scott (Queen), all of Roanoke Rapids, NC; special nephew/brother: Willie "Buck" Scott, "Little Black Boy" (Sheila) of Roanoke Rapids, NC; brother-in-law: Frazier L. Hawkins, Jr. of Roanoke Rapids, NC; sister-in-law: Catherine Scott of Roanoke Rapids, NC; his bonus/second family: Samuel and Terry Taylor, Gerrode Grant, Korey Grant, Nakia Smith, Tyreese Smith, Nicholas Smith, Timothy Jones, Lisa Browning, Jamie Jones, Gayla Jones, Iris Pierce, Renee Williams, Sheila Garner, Brenda Taylor, Rotonya Holmes, Jovon and Toya Squire, Shaunique Taylor, Shaunques Thorpe, Danielle Taylor, Raven Taylor, Andrea Spruill, Manicia Wilson, Flora Wilson, Brian Hockaday, Bobby Jones, Dorothy Jones, Georgia Boyd, Lina Jones, James Lashley, Deesharie Boone, Ashley Haynes, Alyssia Grant, Kelly Thornton, Rickella Rawls and his good friends, Malik Robinson and Tyrel Lewter; a host of nieces, great-nieces, great-great-nieces; nephews, great-nephews, great-great-nephews; and many, many cousins, other relatives and friends.
