Survived by his wife Judith, son Seth G. Slade and his husband Marc A. Peloquin, of New York City; sister Marla Schay Barker, brother Peter Schay and his wife Pat, sister-in-law Barbara Schay, brother-in-law Steven Roemer and his wife Rivka Katz, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends. Predeceased by brother Daniel Schay, and brother-in-law Robert H. Barker.
Born in New Haven, CT, Michael spent his childhood in New York City and Albertson, New York, graduating from Mineola High School. He graduated from Rutgers University with a degree in Physics. Through the university's Hillel Association, he met his wife Judith who was studying at Douglas College. After getting married in 1963, they then moved to the Rochester, New York area for Michael to work at Xerox. They first resided in Webster, and then moved to Pittsford. He spent his entire career at Xerox, first performing basic research and then working on computer printers, after obtaining an MS in Computer Science from the Rochester Institute of Technology, until his retirement in 1998.
His early retirement allowed him and Judy to take many trips, including to Italy, England, Australia, New Zealand, and Ireland, along with annual visits to Chilmark on Martha's Vineyard and St. Martin in the Caribbean. They also made regular visits to family members throughout the United States.
Michael was a man of eclectic interests, some of which were (at various points of his life) beekeeping, winemaking, beermaking, breadmaking (including milling his own flours), weaving, sailing his 17-foot Thistle on Irondequoit Bay as a member of the Rochester Canoe Club, running for local political offices, glass blowing, Samoyed owner, iPhone repairing, attending GEVA Theatre, Rochester Philharmonic, and other local cultural shows, being an Off-Broadway producer, attending Broadway shows in New York City, taking walks along the Erie Canal, rooting for the Buffalo Bills, and browsing for good bargains at local garage sales.
He was an active member of the Pittsford Democratic Committee, and regularly served as an election inspector and site supervisor. Over the last several years, Michael was a devoted caregiver to Judy, who is living with Alzheimer's disease.
A memorial service for Michael will be held in Rochester during the summer. Details will be provided here shortly.
Donations in Michael's honor may be made to your local Democratic party organization, the Geva Theatre of Rochester (https://gevatheatre.org/support-geva/), or Temple B'rith Kodesh (https://www.tbk.org/gifts-giving).
