Michael Smarch Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Watkins Brothers Funeral Homes – MacDonald Chapel - Howell on Jan. 20, 2026.
Michael Smarch passed away on December 15, 2025, at his home in Louisville, Kentucky, at the age of 63.
Michael shared his life with his partner, Donna Esther Ostrander, who preceded him in death. Together they shared a bond shaped by loyalty, shared experiences, and time spent navigating life side by side. Michael cared deeply for Donna's family and valued his relationship with them, including Natalie, Eddie, Chad and Lance Ostrander, who remained an important part of his life.
Born on January 9, 1962, and raised in Howell, Michigan, Michael was the son of John and Judy Smarch and brother to Johnny Smarch, all of whom preceded him in death. He is survived by his siblings Dan (Sherri) Smarch, Dawn (Angela) Smarch and Dennis (Donna) Smarch, along with extended family members.
Michael served in the United States Navy, completing boot camp in Chicago and serving overseas. While he did not enjoy military life itself, he valued the opportunity to travel and experience different parts of the world, particularly time spent in the Philippine Islands.
Throughout his life, Michael lived in several places, including Michigan, Florida, California, and Kentucky, moving frequently and living independently.
Music was a constant throughout Michael's life. He played guitar from a young age and had a lifelong love of heavy metal music, with a particular fondness for Ozzy Osbourne.
Family and friends hold warm, fond memories of Michael's sense of humor and distinctive laugh, which brought moments of levity and familiarity to those around him.
Michael lived life on his own terms, often outside convention, and will be remembered for his authenticity and individuality.
Arrangements and services will be announced at a later date.
