SALEM-Michael W. Smith, a man whose zest for life was as infectious as his love for his family, passed away at the age of 73, on Tuesday morning, February 24, 2026, at Salem Regional Medical Center after an extended illness.
Born in
East Liverpool, Ohio, on March 27, 1952, to the late Donald E. and Patricia A. (Welsh) Smith, Michael's early years were steeped in the joys of small-town life and the close-knit bonds of family.
From an early age, Michael developed a passion for baseball. He and his brother were immersed in the sport, thanks in large part to their father's dedication to coaching and his help in the development of the East Liverpool Colt Baseball League. The highlight of his young baseball career was in 1968, when Michael, along with his brother, and their team journeyed to Riverside, CA, to compete in the Colt League World Series, finishing as runner-up-a cherished memory that would last a lifetime. Michael's love for the game never waned, and he remained a loyal fan of the Pittsburgh Pirates, even having the honor of throwing a first pitch at one of their games.
After graduating from Beaver Local High School in 1970, Michael furthered his education at Kent State University, where he earned an associate's degree in business. His professional career began at WOHI & WELA Radio Stations in East Liverpool, where not only did he kickstart his career in sales but also met the love of his life, Doreen B. Adams. The two were united in marriage on May 6, 1981, and would go on to share 44 wonderful years together.
Michael's career took him and his growing family across the country, from Missouri to Florida to Columbus, as he advanced to the position of Vice President/General Manager at Lamar Advertising Company before his retirement in 2016. His success in the industry was a testament to his outgoing personality, boundless enthusiasm, loyalty, and quick wit.
Family was the cornerstone of Michael's life. He embraced the role of a dedicated and loving husband, a nurturing father, and an adoring Papa. His granddaughters brought him immense joy, and he cherished every moment spent with them. Michael's culinary talents were legendary among his family, and he especially loved cooking them his "big breakfasts" and grilling and smoking delicious meats at family gatherings. The family home was never without the loyal companionship of their German Shepherds, whom Michael enjoyed training. His leisure time was filled with traveling by RV with his family, collecting guns, and playing a game of golf.
Michael was Catholic by faith and found comfort and hope in attending St. Paul Catholic Church in Salem.
Michael's legacy of love and unwavering dedication to his family will be carried on by his wife, Doreen; his daughter, Dawn and her husband, Greg DeCarlo, of Austintown; and his granddaughters, Avalynn, Michaela, and Ella DeCarlo.
In addition to his parents, Michael was preceded in death by his brother, William V. Smith.
In keeping with Michael's wishes, there will be no calling hours or service.
The family would like to express their appreciation and thank the staff at Salem Regional Medical Center for the wonderful care Michael and they received.
