Mike Tomtishen, beloved husband of Joyce for 55 years, loving father and grandfather.
Mike was always helping people. At the age of 15, he was responding to emergency calls while living at Christie Memorial Chapel in New Baltimore. He did that until he entered the US Army in 1967 and was a paratrooper with 101st infantry airborne. He served in Vietnam where he was wounded in action twice and received the Purple Heart.
After the Army, Mike was a paramedic with Universal Ambulance in Warren. He later worked for Chrysler while being a Chesterfield Township firefighter. He was three times firefighter of the quarter and was awarded a plaque from Humane Society for rescuing a dog from a burning house.
Mike was a lifetime member of VFW post 7573 and AmVets 52, and also a member of the American Legion and Fraternal Order of Eagles. A 40 year member of VFW Honor guard, he was awarded recognition for saving the life of a fellow parade marcher in 1980, and recognized by VFW for lifetime dedicated patriotism in honoring fallen veterans.
Mike was dedicated to his wife and three girls, enjoying camping, sports, and family events. He was a minister with Universal Life Church, and was extremely honored to perform marriage ceremonies for both his daughter and his grandson. Mike loved playing golf, and was very successful, winning many awards and prizes. He was a member of Anchor Bay Men's pool league and enjoyed playing cards.
Mike leaves behind his wife of 55 yrs Joyce, his daughters Anita Toler, Ann-Marie (Gene III) Massey, Barbara (Mike) Rohde. Grandchildren: Shayla (Alex) Masakowski, Jason (Ciera) Rohde, Leah Massey and Gene Massey IV and a sibling: Brenda Tomtishen.
In 2023 he was named New Baltimore Citizen of the Year, honoring his dedication and many accomplishments. He will be so fondly remembered by us all.
