Michael Joseph Wilgus, age 79, died August 24, 2025 following a long illness.
Born April 19, 1946 in Mt. Clemens, Michigan, he was the son of William Howard Wilgus and Alda Marie Vanderheiden.
As the son of a commanding officer, Michael grew up in the Air Force. Michael graduated Jesuit High School with honors; attended Northeastern JR. College and Regis College where he finished Summa Cum Laude.
Michael was a veteran of the US Army having served as Staff Sergeant – SSG, during the Vietnam War.
Michael, a Cold War patriot, was employed at Rocky Flats, a nuclear weapons facility. Before Rocky Flats, he worked in mining and aerospace. His specialty was R&D and bench top chemistry.
Michael enjoyed rafting, baseball, reading, trivial pursuit and traveling in his motorhome.
He was a firm leader with a sense of humor, which would take you by surprise. He was nicknamed king in one lab, where the Phantom lived on the company bulletin board. Michael is survived by his wife, Amy; daughters, Shelly and Mindy; and grandson, Kyle.
No memorial services will be held. Instead of flowers, please consider making a memorial contribution in the decedent’s name to the DAV.
