Michael Anthony Williams, Sr., of Gloucester, passed away peacefully on May 19, 2022, at Beverly Hospital, surrounded by his family after a brief illness.
Born in Terre Haute, Indiana on July 8, 1945, Mike was the son of Flora Elizabeth (Johnson) Williams.
A lifelong resident of Gloucester, he met the love of his life Sandra (Daggett) when they were teenagers and married in 1964. They would have celebrated their 59th anniversary this November.
Attending Gloucester schools and graduating from Gloucester High in 1963, Mike, was a member of the Benjamin Franklin Print Shop. Upon graduation, he was employed by Tadco Mfg. as a silk screen printer. He also worked for Giles of Gloucester and Greenleaf.
In 1971, Mike joined the Gloucester Fire Department. He retired after 29 years of service to the department and the community with the rank of Captain. After retirement, for the past several years, he was a driver for MassTrans, transporting adults with special needs to and from work, which he found very rewarding.
Along with his wife Sandy, he loved spending summers at Good Harbor Beach, watching their children, then later on, grandchildren, play in the sand and surf or exploring the waters at Salt Island looking for treasures. He always found joy in attending his children's school and sporting events. As time went on, this happiness carried forward to his grandchildren, cheering them on either in person or via live stream.
He enjoyed vacationing in Florida, Hawaii, California, Niagara Falls, Lake George and visiting the many attractions of the White Mountains of New Hampshire. His various hobbies included collecting coins and Pez dispensers, model rocketry and taking his grandchildren fishing.
He is survived by his beloved wife of nearly 59 years Sandra S. (Daggett) Williams; his children Sheri Marie and her husband George Dennis of Wyndmoor, PA; Gloucester Police Lieutenant Michael A. Williams Jr. of Gloucester; Hanscom AFB Fire Lieutenant Keith Michael and his wife Michele Colotti-Williams of Hampton, NH; Retired USCG Commander Eric Anthony and his wife Teresa Williams of Potomac, MD; and Chad Michael Williams of Gloucester.
Mike's biggest joy was being the proud Papa of 13 grandchildren; Michael Robert, Amanda Elizabeth, Zachary James, Alexis Katherine, Hayley Marie, Mason Alexander, Michael Antonio, Connor Jacob, Michael Anthony III, Nathan Paul, Cameron Michael, Kai Kosonen and Kaarina Tang; and a great-grandson, Avery Cole. They all loved him deeply and will miss him greatly.
He is also survived by a brother-in-law, Terry Crawford of Gloucester and several nieces and nephews. Mike was predeceased by his sister Elizabeth Beauparlant Roy and his brother Bruce Williams.
The Williams Family would like to extend a very special thank you to the doctors, nurses and staff of the Intensive Care/Critical Care Unit at Beverly Hospital. The dedication to their profession and the care they provided will never be forgotten.
