Mike was born in Brevard, North Carolina on April 19, 1950, to his parents Andrew and Mary Ruth Williams. He was a member of an Air Force family and grew up following his father's military assignments to Bermuda, Okinawa, Oklahoma, Massachusetts, and Amarillo (twice). Despite growing up in locales throughout the United States and across the world, Mike lived most of his adult life in the Charlotte area among his friends and family.

Mike is preceded in death by his parents, Andrew and Mary Ruth Williams, his sister Enola Gay Williams Boyd, brother-in-law John Boyd, and Mike's son, Travis Williams.
He is survived by his wife Debbie Williams, step-daughter Kari (Tony) Haigler, step-son Robbie (Megan) Stegall; former wife, Bernice Thompson Pressley and their son, Jeremy (Marla) Williams; one brother, Vernon (Kay) Williams; grandchildren Justin Stegall, Erin Haigler, Carissa Stegall, William Haigler, Daxtyn Stegall, Leightyn Stegall, and Anna Williams; nieces Beth Williams, Minda Ciardi, Shayna Boyd, and Rachel Boyd-Nichols; nephew Andy Williams; and two great-grandchildren.
