Mickey Lynn Sims

Mickey Lynn Sims, formerly of Pampa and Lubbock, Texas, passed away on September 15, 2025, in Amarillo, Texas.

Services will be 2:00 PM Saturday, September 20, 2025 at Carmichael-Whatley Colonial Chapel with Lee Cornelison, McKinley Sims, and David Sims officiating. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery in Pampa, Texas, where he will be laid to rest next to his mother and father. Arrangements are under the direction of Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors and Crematory.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday, September 19, 2025 from 6:00-7:30 PM.

Mickey was born September 25, 1952, in Pampa, Texas, to William Mickey “Bill” Sims and Christine LaVelle Rossmiller Sims. He attended Pampa schools, graduating from Pampa High School in 1971 where he was a member of the Harvester football and basketball teams. While attending high school, he attended several leadership conferences and camps and also served as student body president his senior year. At the time of his graduation, many of his friends were awarded different colored sashes (cords) to be draped around their necks signifying achievements in education while students at PHS, but none of the sashes were white. Always wanting to be the standout and so as not to be outdone, Mickey secretly took the white cord from the American flag that was on stage where the diploma presentation was to take place, earlier in the day before anyone noticed, and proudly, boldly, and mischievously wore it during the graduation ceremony and the walk across the stage for the diploma presentation. He set himself apart from all the others by having the only white sash, although few noticed it.

Mickey went on to graduate from Texas Tech University, where he was a proud member of the Saddle Tramps spirit organization and ultimately served as president of the group. After college, Mickey entered the banking business for a while but was afforded the opportunity to go to work in the telecommunications business where he spent the rest of his time before retiring. He was active in the National Telecommunications Cooperative Association, including serving as president in the 1990s. He was a constant encouragement for his children to be the best they could be, to have the best of educational opportunities, and to take care of other people.

After he retired, Mickey moved back to Amarillo, Texas for a while and then moved to Denver, Colorado to spend much time with his beloved companion before eventually moving back to Amarillo.

Mickey was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Randall Howard “Randy” Sims; his sister-in-law, Judy Kay Dunn Sims; his brother-in-law, Sean Boales; his grandparents; his best friend since junior high, Dan Hood; and a slew of aunts, uncles, cousins, friends, and associates.

He is survived by his daughter, Polly Sims of Houston, Texas; his son, McKinley Lynn Sims, married to Kristen, and their son and daughter, Gryffin Evangelos Sims and Maverick Lynn Sims, all of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; his sister, Sandra Gayle Sims Boales of Pampa, Texas; his brother, William Greg Sims and wife Nancy of Kingsmill, Texas; his sister-in-law, Lonas Sue Wright Sims of Sunray, Texas; special cousin, Trisha (Pat) Sims; the mother of his children, Frankie Sims; several nieces, nephews, and other cousins; and dear friends, Steve Haley and Don Richards, both of Lubbock, Texas. He is also survived by his long-time companion, Pam Shelhamer Grant of Denver.

Memorials can be made to a favorite charity of choice.
