Robert Michael Grebe, 80, of Louisville, passed away peacefully at his home on Friday, March 14th, 2025, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Mike was born on September 18th, 1944, in Louisville, Kentucky, to the late William Hayes Grebe and Isabel Gresham Grebe. He attended Durrett High School in Louisville, and then earned his Bachelor's degree from Austin Peay State University and his Master's degree from Marshall University. Mike was a member of Saint Bernadette Catholic Church.
Anyone who knew Mike knew he loved sports. As a young man, he played basketball and baseball and was able to compete at both the high school and collegiate levels. Later, he also developed his love for golf, which he played up until late last fall. He was a lifelong fan of the University of Kentucky Wildcats and the Cincinnati Reds. Mike learned to love many other sports, such as football, soccer, swimming, lacrosse, cross country, and cheerleading, as all of his children and grandchildren pursued their athletic passions. Mike also loved photography and could often be found roaming the sidelines pursuing the perfect sports action shot.
Mike began his career as a high school teacher and basketball coach, including stops at Owensboro Catholic High School and Shelby County High School and was a Graduate Assistant Basketball Coach at Marshall University. Later, he moved into the business world and was a co-owner with late wife, Diane J. Grebe, of Computer Resources Corporation, a small computer company, from which he eventually retired.
Mike had a gregarious personality with a great sense of humor and that he had never met a stranger. He loved to learn about other people and cultures and had always encouraged his kids to be kind and compassionate to others. He had a heart for helping people and found his greatest joy in making other people happy. During his final years, Mike had taken a part-time job at St. Mary Academy because he said he liked to stay busy and loved the smiles of the kids that he saw every day.
Known as Poppy to his grandkids, he relished the role of father and grandfather. Whether it was a musical performance, a work of art, an academic achievement, or an athletic event, he was always there to support and encourage his family. His greatest joy was seeing his family find happiness and success in life.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents; his loving wife, Diane J Grebe; and son, William Kurt Grebe. He is survived by his children, Kevin Michael Grebe (Lori), LTC David Lance Grebe, Maria Renee Maupin, Heather Maupin Rose, and Jonathan Bret Grebe; and grandchildren, Isabel E. Grebe, Ethan P. Grebe, Noah M. Grebe, Cole D. Anderson, Peter H. Anderson, Wynton H. Rose, and Griffin B. Rose. His extended family includes his sister, Bonnie Young, and his niece, Peyton Young (Harry), and great-niece, Zoe Shapiro.
Visitation will be 4:00 pm - 8:00 pm and a Funeral Vigil at 6:30 pm on Tuesday, March 18th, at Highlands Funeral Home, 3331 Taylorsville Road, with Mass at Saint Bernadette Catholic Church, 6500 Saint Bernadette Avenue, Prospect, Kentucky, on Wednesday, March 19th at 10:00 a.m, with burial at Resthaven Memorial Park.

As a teacher at SMA, Mike always brightened my day with his smile when I brought my class into the cafeteria for lunch. I enjoyed his talking with him so much that I always tried to make time for a quick visit with Mike at the cafeteria window. In just a couple minutes, we´d talk about a ball game, his grandkids or some good stories about what we had seen going on with the students in the lunchroom. I loved how Mike was always quick to point out the kind deeds that he had noticed students doing that day.
Even though our moments together were brief, I will always remember his sincere kindness, sense of humor and the warmth of his smile. I know I´m just one of many at St. Mary´s that is really going to miss Mike at school. Sending prayers for his family and loved ones.

Bonnie,
I'm sure you don't remember me but we all lived at 844 until you all moved. I have such fond memories of that time. I always think of us like "Our Gang", you, Mike, Nancy, the Snyder boys and me. I also loved your Mother. I'm so sorry about Mike, may he rest in peace. Judy Binus
