Mildred Barton, 93, of Kerrville died on July 9, 2025, as a result of a traffic accident in Kerrville. She was in the company of her family as her life’s work was completed.

Mildred is survived by one daughter, one son, one brother, three sisters, and many cousins and friends.

She was born and lived in Minnesota and had many aunts, uncles, and cousins who lived in the same area. She graduated from high school in Minnesota, then attended college in Texas. Mildred was employed by the Department of Defense for 35 years. She was tasked with worldwide distribution of Army aircraft and the placement of parts to maintain or replace equipment during both peace and wartime. In this capacity she received multiple commendations and was awarded a civilian medal from her military commanders. Post-retirement, Mildred was a lifelong learner and traveler. She, with her late husband Hal, lived in several states, from coast to coast. Along the way they collected friendships and memories that have continued to this day.

Mildred was active in American Red Cross disaster relief teams, as a Kerrville Chamber of Commerce volunteer, in the Kerrville Citizen Police Academy Alumni Association, and in her church, Zion Lutheran of Kerrville. Known as “The Bear Lady,” she was recognized by the Texas Association of Healthcare Volunteers (TAHV) in 2023 for her work and completion of the Bears Project.

A memorial service will be held at Zion Lutheran Church on Saturday, 26 July, at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations go in her memory to the Zion Cares ministry at Zion Lutheran Church Kerrville, or to the Hill Country Youth Ranch or to another worthy support group of your choosing.

Services with integrity, pride, and honor are under the direction of Kerrville Funeral Home. (830) 895-5111

“O death, where is thy victory? O death, where is thy sting?” But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, by beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain. I Corinthians 15:55,57-58
