By any meaningful measure, Mildred (Millie) (Petelchuk) Cheplick lived a rich and wonderful life. Her family and friends were blessed to share 92 years with her, and they now find comfort in the many memories she leaves behind. Millie passed away peacefully at her home on July 18th, 2025.
Born on March 23rd, 1933, at the end of the Great Depression, Millie was the youngest of the Petelchuk siblings and the last to leave us. Alongside her brother Paul and sisters Irene, Helen, Mary, and Evelyn, Millie was raised in Elmira Heights, New York. The family, proud east-siders, often recalled the strength of their community and how the hardships of the time made simple pleasures like summer days at Eldridge Park or skating at Joycrest especially sweet.
Millie graduated from Thomas A. Edison High School in 1950 and began working at Ward LaFrance at the age of 17. Her dedication was quickly recognized, and she was later recruited by American Bridge with the promise of a fifteen-cent raise. Her career path shifted, however, when she married the love of her life, Tom Cheplick, in April 1955. At the time, the company policy required women to resign upon marriage, and Millie gladly gave up her position to begin a new chapter with Tom. Together, they made their home on 15th Street in Elmira Heights, where they remained for nearly 70 years. Although she moved to the west side of Elmira Heights, a piece of her heart always remained on the east side on Sheridan Avenue.
The Holy Trinity Orthodox Church was the cornerstone of Millie and Tom's life. Every Sunday was sacred-spent at church in the choir, surrounded by faith, followed by family gatherings at her mother's home just down the road. Her four sisters remained close by, and their bond created an extended family filled with joy and laughter. Whether it was picnics at Harris Hill, church functions, or holiday meals, Millie cherished these moments deeply.
For all who knew her, Millie also had a passion for fashion. She was known for always dressing beautifully for church and work and she had an outfit, accessories, and jewelry for every occasion. Millie's timeless style and eye for detail reflected the care and pride she brought to every aspect of her life.
Above all, Millie's greatest joy in life was her family. She lived for her children, adored her grandchildren, and held her nieces and nephews close to her heart. Nothing made her happier than a full house, a table surrounded by loved ones, and the sound of laughter shared across generations. She loved unconditionally, offering wisdom, warmth, and encouragement in abundance.
In addition to raising four children, Millie was actively engaged in civic life. She served for many years as a voting booth clerk and was especially proud of her work with a group of dedicated neighbors who successfully fought to preserve Oakridge Park from being developed into a hotel and parking lot.
When her children were school-aged, Millie returned to the workforce as a school secretary. Known for her professionalism, precision, and kindness, she was beloved by staff and students alike. Her commitment and compassion were honored when the student body dedicated their yearbook to her upon her retirement. She made sure that as she finished each work day, her desk would be clean and the next day would already be organized. So, when she left us this past week in the promise of eternal life, rest assured her "desk was clean."
Millie is survived by her four children and their spouses: Thomas (Maria) Cheplick, Steven (Shirley) Cheplick, Julie (David) Cordingley, and Deanna (Timothy) McLaughlin. She is also lovingly remembered by her grandchildren, Andrew (Jillian), Alyson (Chris), Larissa, Julianna, Thomas, Nikolai, Melania, and Alexei, and by many dear nieces and nephews, who were a constant and cherished part of her life.
In lieu of flowers, Millie requested that donations be made to Holy Trinity Orthodox Church on Horseheads Boulevard in Elmira Heights. Calling hours will be held at the Holy Trinity Orthodox Church, 140 Horseheads Boulevard on, Friday August 1st from 4-7 pm and Mass of Christian Burial, Saturday, August 2nd at 10am.Committal prayers and interment will follow in Holy Trinity Orthodox Cemetery.
