Mildred Handy Obituary

Mildred's Journey
Mildred Smith Handy, of Frankford, Delaware transitioned peacefully to eternal rest on Thursday, March 10, 2022.
Born on March 13, 1933, to the late Clinton and Hattie Smith, Mildred (Mimmy) was one of twelve children. She was educated in Worcester County Schools and later attended Bowie State College where she earned a Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education. Mildred began her teaching career at Flower Street Elementary School where she taught First grade. She continued her teaching career at Ocean City Elementary School, teaching Third graders, and retired after 39½ wonderful years.
At an early age, Mildred often attended St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Berlin, Maryland, but eventually became a lifetime member of Zoar United Methodist Church in Selbyville, Delaware.
Mildred loved to grow plants and flowers. Every spring and summer, she would fill numerous flower beds with beautiful roses, petunias, portulacas, and lilies, to name just a few. Being a very competitive individual, Mildred loved to play bingo and any other type of board game. Often, Mildred was so competitive, she would make you play until she won. Additionally, Mildred loved collecting things, and over the years compiled a large collection of antiques, bells, baskets, and coins. Finally, she enjoyed traveling. Mildred was able to visit numerous places but took pride in visiting Alaska, California, New Mexico, and Canada.
During retirement, Mildred volunteered her time at Central Elementary School of Seaford, Delaware, and the Boys and Girls Club of Millsboro, Delaware. She was also a member of the Worcester County Retired School Personnel Association.
Mildred married the late Wallace Frank Handy, of Bishopville, MD. They were married for 56 years, until his death. She leaves behind to cherish her memories, two children: Wallace Jr. (Jeff) of Laurel, DE (wife Mamie) and Wynnette (Net) Hansen of Salisbury, MD (husband Jeff); two sisters: Jerdeane Waters of Berlin, MD, and Grace Gray of Delmar, DE; two grandchildren, Wilson Handy Sr. (wife Larittica) of Bishopville, MD, and Whitney Handy of Metuchen, NJ; two great-grandchildren, Wilson Jr. and Emory, both of Bishopville, MD and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
In addition to her parents, Mildred was also preceded in death by her husband: Wallace Sr., her son Wilson (twin of Wynnette); four brothers: Morgan Smith, Robert Smith Sr., Irvin Smith, and John Smith Sr., and four sisters: Frances Wilson, Rosetta Hobbs, Luretta Purnell, and Martha Tindley.
Lovingly & Sorrowfully Submitted by the Family
(A Psalm of David.)
1. The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.
2. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.
3. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.
4. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
5. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.
6. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.
