She was feisty, bossy, and certainly never wrong. Mildred "Millie" McCarty, age 98, pulled the ultimate Irish exit when she went to sleep peacefully and woke up in Heaven with her parents, siblings, husband, and son on January 25, 2022. She always hated her middle name, so we'll exclude it here. For the record though, just a hint starts with an "I" and ends with a "rene".
Millie was born on December 9, 1923, to James and Hazel Deck (and four older brothers) in Coralville, Iowa.
A few years later, the family moved to the Ozarks. Despite her protests, Millie's parents made her stay in school until she graduated Central High School in 1941. She somehow managed (or bribed someone for) a diploma as she spent most of her time with friends at Pappy's Place BBQ instead of actually going to class. After graduation, she landed a job at Heer's department store for a hot minute until she met the best candidate a for husband ever, Joseph W. McCarty Sr. Shortly after she turned 19, they married on December 15, 1942.
She always managed to get away with anything. When her and her friends were teenagers, they "accidentally soaped a police car's windows" not knowing there were officers inside. When she quickly realized her mistake, she outran four officers, cut her leg open to the bone and made it home safely without getting caught.
She was also a tough cookie. After having lived through the Great Depression, obstacles never seemed to phase her. As a teenager, she flipped her car 4 times, was ejected into a cornfield, and walked away with barely a scratch. Later, when her husband was away serving as a fighter pilot in WW2, Millie lovingly served as caregiver for her terminally ill mother, all while being 8 months pregnant.
She was a devoted member of the Methodist church, made the best angel food cake with white icing ever, and loved to play Dominoes. Although she was mostly a home maker, she was proud to be a top Avon saleswoman working hard to make sure the entire city of Springfield was drowning in Skin-So-Soft until she was 90. In her later years, turns out she was down to party. Hobbies included posing for pictures with martinis, accompanying her grandchildren to Vegas, and telling people what to do. She was a problem solver, clever negotiator and firmly believed that Valium could cure anything. Not exactly sound medical advice, but she made it to 98 so she must've done something right. She was sassy, but she was the best.
Millie is survived by her daughter, Cindy Sherman (Bobby); daughter in law, Barbara McCarty; grandchildren, Kiersten McCarty Schroeder (Troy), Tom McCarty (Beth), Amy Tillman Baer (Ryan), Jill Tillman Cooper (TBD), Stacy Tillman Pihana (Adam); great grandchildren, Sydney, Sophie, Aiden, Asher, Maxwell, and Samuel; sister-in-law, Carolyn McCarty; and many nieces and nephews.
The family's most grateful thanks to Dr. Zubair and the entire staff at Turners Rock for their excellent care.
The family will receive visitors Saturday, January 29 from 10am to 11am at Greenlawn Funeral Home East with service following at 11:00 a.m. and burial at Rivermonte Cemetery.
