Mildred Ann Schauer, of Strasburg, Ohio passed away September 26th at Bethany Nursing Home in Canton, Ohio. The family is incredibly grateful for the love and care that the Bethany staff showed our mother and our family.
Mildred was the daughter of Rolland J. Dozer and Mary Mildred Dozer and was born November 29, 1936 on the family dairy farm near Roseville, Ohio, the oldest of 4 children. She was the salutatorian of the class of 1954 of Roseville High School and attended Wittenberg University where she was a member of the concert and marching bands and a charter member of Kappa Delta Epsilon, an education honorary. After earning a Cadet teaching certificate she started teaching at the age of 19. She received her Bachelors of Education degree from Muskingum College in 1967.
Mildred was a well known teacher in the area having taught 49 years - 34 years full-time at Tri-Valley, Garaway, Strasburg and New Philadelphia school districts. She then served as a substitute teacher in New Philadelphia and Strasburg. She positively influenced thousands of students' lives and was often referenced as a favorite all time teacher for many. Her dedication to her students was inspiring. She trained many student teachers who went on to spread her light and legacy in many elementary schools around the state.
Mildred was a member of Grace Lutheran church for 65 years where she served as a member of the choir and was a Sunday school teacher.
She was a life-time member of the Ohio Retired Teachers, and a member and past president of Alpha Kappa chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her first husband, Francis Johns Jr. who died May 31, 1965.
Mildred is survived by her husband Paul C. Schauer and 3 children - Dr. David Johns (Kim Thomas) of Hartville, Paul E. Schauer (Carla) of Columbus, Ohio, Marianne Schauer (William Treacle Jr.) Canton, Ohio, two sisters Marjorie (Edward) Gamble of Crooksville, Ohio and Dorothy (Richard) Heckel of Roseville, Ohio, one brother George (Judith) Dozer of Roseville, Ohio. She is survived by her beloved 3 grandchildren, Nick Schauer (Madison, Wisconsin), Brynna and Aric Schauer of Columbus, Ohio.
To honor Mildred and recognize the Lord's work in her life there will be a gathering for family, students and friends.
Calling hours will be held on Tuesday from 5-7 pm at the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home in Dover. The funeral service is Wednesday at 11 am in the Grace Lutheran Church, Dover with a Lutheran burial at Grandview Union Cemetery in Strasburg, followed by a meal at Toland-Herzig Funeral Home in Strasburg.
In lieu of flowers please donate to one of the organizations dear to her heart. The family would like to thank the doctors and researchers at the James Cancer Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. Mildred, a 17 year cancer survivor of Multiple Myeloma was proud to be involved in research for a cure and thankful to contribute through Pelotonia grants directly used for cancer research. Please visit (pelotonia.org). The Tuscarawas County Chapter of Ohio Retired Teachers - envelopes will be made available for contributions to the scholarship fund at the services. Grace Lutheran Church of Dover, Ohio, where she was a member.
