Mildred Phillips Snell, age 96, former resident of Pine Bluff, died May 13, 2024, at Garrett Woods Senior Living in Hot Springs.
Born June 3, 1927, at Dexter AR, she was the daughter of Virdie C. Phillips, and Gussie Kelley Phillips.
Mildred was reared and received her early education in Pine Bluff and White Hall, graduating from White Hall High School in 1945 as Valedictorian.
She married Buddy Snell in 1948. He preceded her in death in 1989.
Mrs. Snell was a member of Greenlee Baptist Church in Pine Bluff, where she was an organist for 40 years. She served as a pianist in the Childrens Dept. for many years. She played with a gospel trio known as the "The Harmonettes," in years past and organized a youth and adult uke band at Greenlee in the early nineties. She loved writing poetry and playing music. She played numerous instruments and was self-taught. She got real joy from helping others learn to play. Though she had no children of her own, she loved her nieces and nephews dearly and her many friends.
She was the first switchboard operator of the Pine Bluff Commercial.
Along with her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her four brothers, Clyde, Willie, Eulan and Arthur Phillips.
She moved to Hot Springs 14 years ago to be near her nephew, Hershel Phillips and his wife Linda Phillips who were her caregivers. Other survivors include two more nephews, Ronnie (Betty) Phillips of Benton and Charles Phillips of Houston, Texas and one niece, Reba (Gordon) Hurt of Millington, Tennessee.
Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m., Friday, May 17, 2024 in the Chapel of Ralph Robinson and Son with Brother James Watson officiating. Family will receive friends at Robinson's after the service. Interment will be private in Memorial Park Cemetery.
The family would like to thank Garrett Woods Senior Living and Dierkson Hospice for their wonderful care of Mrs. Snell.
Memorials may be made to Dierkson Hospice, 3954 Central Avenue H, HostSprings, AR 71913.

May 16, 2024

I'm writing for my aunt and uncle, Evelyn and Hughey Harper. Mildred and Buddy were their best friends in Pine Bluff. I've seen pictures of them having a wonderful time together. Coincidentally, Mildred befriended my mother-in-law, Jo San Short at Garrett Manor, when they lived across the hall from each other. I visited Mildred several times, and she was such a joy to be with. Mildred will be missed by all those who were lucky to have known her.
