Milton "Milt" Benjamin Marke, longtime resident of Greenville, South Carolina, died on May 13, 2023, following a period of declining health. Born on August 2, 1930, in Syracuse, New York, he was the son of Jacob and Mildred (Brahms) Markowitz. A graduate from New York University (B.S. 1953; M.B.A. 1954), he enlisted in the Army and served his country proudly during the Korean War from 1954 to 1956. He was co-owner of Marke & Marke, an insurance, health, and benefits agency based in Greenville, South Carolina.
In addition to his parents, Milt was preceded in death by his wife Norma (Baum) Marke and his older brother Seymour Markowitz. He is survived by his younger brother, Raymond Markowitz of West Palm Beach, Florida; his son and daughter-in law David and Jessica (Hecker) Marke of Greenville, South Carolina; and his beloved grandchildren: Jacob Marke and his wife Caroline Gilmer, of Denver, Colorado, and Joshua Marke of Charleston, South Carolina.
An avid baseball player – once invited to try out for the New York Yankees – Milt loved all sports and remained forever one of the Atlanta Braves' biggest fans. Later in life, he enjoyed watching his grandsons play basketball, baseball, and tennis and engaging in his personal and creative version of coaching from the sidelines, which usually backfired when the coach was his own son.
Milt also loved ALL kinds of ice cream. Meals were not complete without ice cream; holiday traditional desserts were perfect, if topped with ice cream; successful doctor visits to Emory University Hospital or times at the beach deserved to be celebrated with ice cream, especially if one could order a Dairy Queen blizzard with chocolate chips, strawberries, bananas, peanuts, chocolate syrup and whipped cream.
Milt valued the company of family and friends, and they will remember the many ways in which he offered encouragement, shared ideas, and listened to what they had to say. They will miss the many long chats over the years and the dinner table passionate commentary about sports and politics.
The family wishes to express its gratitude to the hospice caretakers and the staff at the Gardens of Eastside for the amazing support and care of Milt during his illness.
Rabbi Samuel Rose will lead a graveside funeral service on Tuesday, May 16, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. in Beth Israel Cemetery, 4814 White Horse Road, Greenville, SC.
Family and friends who are unable to attend the service can view the Livestream by clicking on the "Watch Livestream" button located on the main obituary page.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to the Temple of Israel General Fund, 400 Spring Forest Road Greenville, SC, or the American Cancer Society.

I smiled a lot as I was reading Milt's obituary. He was a good friend to my family. I shared many
meals with him... and also much ice cream.
He was a good friend to Jules and also to me. I
will miss our conversations over the dinner table.
David, I know that you and Jess and the boys will
miss him a lot. He was a great gentleman.
