It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Mitchell Barisich at the age of 100 years old at his Terrytown, Louisiana home on April 15, 2025.
Mitchell (Mitch) was born on September 15, 1924 in Sucuraj, Island of Hvar, Croatia (formally part of Yugoslavia).
He is preceded in death by his parents, Ante and Zvonka Kacic Barišic; sisters, Mare and Tere.
Mitchell is survived by his devoted wife, Spasenka; his three children Tony, Matthew, and Zdenka (Klaus); his grandchildren Blake, Ashley, Alexander, and Maya; as well as his sisters Krasna and Mladenka.
Mitch will be remembered as a strong and resilient man that consistently overcame hardships and obstacles.
At a very young age he became a soldier and an officer in the military with the Yugoslav Partisans successfully leading the resistance movement against axis powers and supporting US allies during World War II. He endured numerous battle wounds, yet by the grace of God survived to live a long, rich life.
In the 1960’s Mitch immigrated to the US from Yugoslavia and then in 1970 his wife and children joined him to pursue the American dream. He was extremely hardworking and remarkably dependable; a diligent and faithful provider.
He had long careers as a Mississippi Riverboat Navigator and also, in the Seafood Industry Hospitality Services. We are forever grateful for his bravery and generosity.
Mitchell was an avid lover of the outdoors. He had a passion for being on and near the water, fishing, gardening, taking walks in the neighborhood, and in his later years sitting on the porch or in the backyard under the tree.
He had a sharp, dry sense of humor with a no nonsense approach to life. He was truly loved and appreciated. We will deeply miss him. Rest in peace "Stari".
