Miriam Nevelow Levy, fondly known as "Mitzi" was born September 22, 1928 in Corpus Christi, Texas and passed away on August 15, 2025.

She passed away peacefully from natural causes just short of her 97th birthday. Mitzi came to Galveston when she was thirteen years old. Attended public school and was a graduate of Ball High School class of 1946. Mitzi was preceded in death by her parents Andrew Lionel Selig and Freda Schreiber Selig, husband Phillip Nevelow, husband Adam J. Levy, son Max Nevelow Sr, wife Shelia, and brother Oury Selig. Mitzi is survived by her son Eric Nevelow, wife Polly, grandchildren Phillip Nevelow, Jessica Parker, Max Nevelow Jr, Nathan Nevelow, partner Erin Stubbs, great grandchildren Jayvin Nevelow, Corbin Stubbs, Logan Stubbs, and Hetty Gilbertson. Sister-in law Miriam Selig and numerous nieces and nephews that she loved so much. Special thanks to Marci Sims, Anjel's Ave. Care Home and Unity Hospice for taking such good care of Mitzi.

Mitzi served as the Executive Director of Gulf Coast Big Brothers and Big Sisters from 1976 to 2005. Mitzi was someone who was a beloved member of our community. Mitzi devoted herself to her family, to her faith, and to those in need, and as a result, those who experienced life with her were the better for it.

Countless souls knew the warmth and love Mitzi was willing to give. The program advanced to serve many children of single parent families of Galveston County. Mitzi continued her commitment to Big Brothers and Big Sisters through her later year until she retired at 77 years of age and after 29 years of devoted service to the organization.

Mitzi served as a board member for Temple B'nai Israel, board member for the United Way of Galveston, Life member of Hadassah, Temple B'nai Israel Sisterhood, Peer Evaluator for Big Brothers/Big Sisters of America, board member Executive Career Women, Secretary of Big Brothers/Big Sisters State Association. Mitzi also received the Human Services Award by the Galveston Education Association, and the Liberty Bell Award by the Galveston County Bar Association and the Public Citizen of the Year Award. She dedicated herself to a life of service to the community she loved.

Mitzi lived many happy years which we were privileged to share with her. Truly each of us who walked with her, basked in the light of her life. May she rest in peace. A Memorial Service to honor her life will be held at Carnes Brothers Funeral Home in Galveston, Texas on Sunday, August 24th, 2025 at 1:00pm.

I lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Congregation B'Nai Israel or Gulf Coast Big Brothers and Big Sisters.
