Moises Rojelio "Roger" Cortez, 85, passed away on May 18, 2024 in Las Vegas, NV. Moe was born on October 20, 1938 in Tyler, TX to Moises Cortez and Eduiges Soliz. As a young boy, he traveled with his family to different states, working various crops. As a young man he would run long distance at track meets, and later played softball and volleyball with family and friends. He was a huge sports fanatic. He loved going fishing and playing cards, his favorite game being "Tonk". He moved to Las Vegas, NV in 1960 where he worked as a purchasing agent, buying and managing food and beverage inventory for the Sahara Hotel. He married Elida Villarreal on May 14, 1960 in Las Vegas, NV, and they raised their five children. They had many family adventures, going on annual vacations, camping and fishing trips, and many family reunions where they had their famous "Tonk" game tournaments. Food was always an important detail to Moe, he would often make his specialties of fideo, rice atole, capirotada, and his famous coffee.
After retiring, he and Elida moved to Cedar City to their dream home. They would often have family over to enjoy their beautiful backyard. He had many days where he could enjoy watching his crime documentaries, episodes of Judge Judy, or a football game with Tom Brady. He had many ways to show his love for his family. He worked hard to provide for them, and his kids never wanted for anything. He took time to make Christmas treat bags for everyone, and would warm the coffee mugs so that it would stay hot for longer. He loved joking and teasing those he loved, often giving nicknames to those closest to him. He'll be very missed. He was loved so very much, especially by his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. We'll all miss just sitting around your beautiful backyard in Cedar, hearing your many stories, over a warm cup of coffee or mom's famous hot chocolate, I hope your stories continue in our dreams.
Moises is survived by his wife, Elida V. Cortez; his children, Vicky (Alfonso) Cortez-Lopez, Ricky Rojelio Cortez, Benny (Kimberly) Cortez, Gilbert (Maryellen) Cortez, and Patricia (Robert) Perry; his twenty grandchildren; thirty-two great-grandchildren; his siblings, Raymundo (Tila) Cortez, Tirso (Lupe) Cortez, Erlinda (Scott) Stewart, and Ermila Pallan; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He is preceded in death by his parents, Moises and Eduiges Cortez; and his siblings, Neddie (Fred) Silva and Roman (Karen) Cortez.
