Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven. - Matthew 5:16
Everyone relax as we make this simulated journey through the life of Mollie Pearl Jones Barefield. It was Saturday, February 3, 1962, when God presented this baby girl to Arthur and Lillie Mae (Jackson) Jones in Mathis, Texas. She was the sixth of seven children born to this couple, but she always said that she was the baby and Novella was a mistake.
Six years later she started her journey down the education highway. That first mile in 1968 led her to the Sandia Elementary School in Sandia, Texas. There were only two black students in attendance, her and her cousin Michael, which she complained about his constant crying. Moving forward she entered the Orange Grove Junior High in Orange Grove, Texas. Picking up speed, she entered Orange Grove High School where she became active in band, volleyball, and basketball. She began her cheerleading career her sophomore year, and it ran to her senior year in which she became head cheerleader.
After graduating from high school, she attended Bee County College in
Beeville, Texas. She received her associate's degree as a clerk typist. To improve her status, she returned to Bee County College where she attained her associate's degree as a lvn/licensed vocational nurse.
She began her lifelong work of spreading God's love by helping the sick and shut-in at the Palma Real Nursing Center in Mathis, Texas. Still spreading love, she worked with Bee Area Home Health. She drove from Beeville to Mission Ridge Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Refugio, Texas. Not wanting to leave the children out, she started caring for young children, as a traveling nurse. She drove to Bishop, Corpus Christi, and Calallen. She even had a child in Beeville. She fulfilled her call to God by performing her nursing duties wherever she was needed.
Working the work of Him that sent her started under the care and teaching of her praying mother. She was baptized by her pastor Rev. E. G. Ferguson at St. Mary's Baptist Church of Mathis, Texas. There she served as Sunday School Secretary and sang in the choir. Still working for God and attending Bee County College she united with Bethlehem Baptist Church of
Beeville, Texas. While there she served as youth matron, sang in the choir, served as pastoral anniversary chairperson, and church treasurer. Relocating her church membership to Mount Pisgah Baptist Church of Mathis, Texas the former church of her father. There she served as youth teacher until her death.
When she was called by her name or nicknames, she would answer, whether it was Mollie Pearl, Mollie, Pearl, "Mouth", "Possum", Molly Turgiss, or "Pale' she had a comeback. When someone would say, "'I'm going to run to the store." She would say, "Drive, you'll get there faster."
On Wednesday, September 11, 2025, the trip was over. She heard a voice tell her to park her car and climb aboard the gospel train to glory. Your seat with your father and mother, Arthur and Lillie Jones, your son, Caleb Leshawn Jones, and your sister, Mabel Jean Jones Taylor have been reserved. Waiting to run and get aboard the train are her two sons, Curtis Lee Jones (Corpus Christi, TX), Cameron Leroy Jones (
