Monica Stofferan age 72 of Ashton, Iowa, passed away Saturday, May 24, 2025, at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD, after a 10-year battle with Multiple Myeloma and Acute Myeloblastic Leukemia.
Family will receive friends from 9:30 AM, until the hour of service at St. Andrews Catholic Church in Sibley.
Funeral service will be 10:30 AM, Friday, May 30th at St. Andrew Catholic Church in Sibley, IA, with Father Siby Punnoose as officiating. Burial will follow at St. Andrew Catholic Cemetery in Sibley.
Monica Lee Stofferan was born January 2, 1953, in Sibley, IA, the daughter of Jesse Dale and Mercedes (Fettes) Newkirk. She grew up in Sibley and graduated from high school in 1970.
She was united in marriage to Marven R. Stofferan Jr. on July 22, 1970, and they started out living in Ocheyedan, IA. They were blessed with four daughters, Marcia, Michele, Megan and Mindi. They made NW Iowa their home and Monica was able to work a variety of jobs from childcare to trucking dispatch for Ahler’s Enterprise until 2015, when she was diagnosed with multiple myeloma.
Monica loved to bake, garden, and collect cookbooks. She never turned any animals away that wandered onto their acreage. She also loved following the lives of their grandchildren with all their interests and activities.
During Monica’s battle with Multiple Myeloma, she doctored between Sioux Falls, SD and Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. On May 15, 2025, Monica was admitted to Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD, where she remained until Saturday, May 24, 2025, when she passed away at the age of 72.
Left to cherish her memory are her husband of 54 years, Marven R. Stofferan Jr. of Ashton, IA; daughter, Marcia (Janine) Kemp of Gilbert, AZ, and their children, Rowan and Maxwell, daughter, Michele Stofferan of Glendale, AZ, daughter, Megan (Charles) Beavis of Longview, TX, and their children, Cody and Josephine, and daughter, Mindi (Ben) Stephenson of Spencer, IA, and their children, Keely, Kiah and Kiran. Also survived by three sisters, Mary Sue Leistico, Meredith (Bruce) Daggett and Margie (George) Braaksma; and several nieces, nephews and other extended family.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Jesse and Mercedes Newkirk; one brother, David Newkirk and his wife Lorraine Newkirk, & two sisters, Melinda and Mayreen Newkirk.
