Monte Palmer was proud to have been born, bred, and educated in Wisconsin. His love for his hometown of Kenosha, the Badgers, and the Packers led him to often express his belief that Wisconsin is God's country. After serving his country as a soldier in the U.S. Air Force stationed in Morocco, he attended the University of Wisconsin where he earned his Ph.D. Monte moved his family to Tallahassee in 1967 to become an FSU professor of political science specializing in Middle East politics where he remained for 34 years. He was often quoted as explaining that one university was his heart, the other his soul.
Monte spent a large portion of his professorial life in the Middle East. He admired the people, respected the culture, and studied political systems. He was fluent in Arabic and had many dear Arab friends and colleagues. The aim of his studies and numerous books and articles was to learn about all aspects of the people of the Arab world in an effort to help his students and others interested in the area understand this very special culture and people. He also enjoyed France, especially Paris where, whenever possible, he would walk along the Seine shopping for French novels in the stalls and visiting the Arab bookshops for the latest Arab literature.
He dedicated his life to try to make the world a better place for his wife of 45 years, Princess; his daughters, Diane Humphreys, Karen Allen, and Melissa Perodeau; his granddaughters, Nikki Avella (Mark) and Katie Allen; his grandson David Humphreys; his great-grand daughters, Carlyle and Elizabeth; his mom, Esther Palmer (deceased) and son-in-law, Timothy Allen (deceased), all of whom he loved dearly.
Private funeral services are being planned. The family would like to thank Big Bend Hospice for the loving care they provided Monte in his final days. In lieu of flowers, Monte asked that you consider donating to Big Bend Hospice in Tallahassee or to the University of Wisconsin, Dept. of Political Science. Todd Wahlquist with Bevis Funeral Home (850-385-2193, www.bevisfh.com) is assisting the Palmer family with their arrangements.

I had known Professor Monte Palmer since 1977 when I joined the Florida State University´s graduate program in political science. For me, Monte was not just a man who supervised my doctoral dissertation and provided me with the knowledge to pursue my academic career. He was a towering individual with an unsurpassable understanding of the world. As a role model whose wisdom and foresight taught me how to negotiate the turbulences of life while maintaining the moral high ground, I will cherish my friendship with Monte for the rest of my life. May his soul rest in peace.
