Moritz “Sonny” Boyd Watson, 86, of Hobbs, New Mexico, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family in Katy, Texas on July 12, 2024.
Sonny was born in Alice, Texas on October 2, 1937, to Joe and Lorraine Watson. He grew up in Freer, Texas and then Pearsall, Texas where he graduated from Pearsall High School. Sonny later served in the Army from 1960-1962, stationed in Fort Knox, Kentucky, Fort Belvoir, Virginia, and Bad Kreuznach, Germany. Sonny was an oilfield salesman for Homco, Maypole Packers, ABC Rental Tools, and then ended his career with some of the best people he knew at Eunice Pump & Supply.
Sonny enjoyed participating in all kinds of outdoor activities and sports. He loved golfing with his buddies and spent much of his time on the greens or working on custom golf clubs. He was an accomplished carpenter, gunsmith, and golfsmith. Sonny made an impact coaching Summer League Baseball, Boys Club Football, and softball. He was also well-known as a great pitcher in the fast-pitch softball league. Sonny’s Christian faith was of great importance to him, and he attended Taylor Memorial Baptist Church where he served as a Sunday school leader for seniors.
Sonny was preceded in death by his parents, Joe Watson and Lorraine Rhodes.
He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Onita (Smith) Watson; two children, Steve Watson and Vicki Buchanan and husband Tad; three granddaughters, Kelsey Robertson and husband Lewis, Kenzie Clark and husband Spencer and Kaylee Buchanan; and one great-granddaughter, Callie Clark.
Sonny loved his Lord, his family, and his country. He will be remembered for his smile and his sense of humor. Sonny was dearly loved by his family and friends and will be greatly missed.
Family and friends are invited to the viewing from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, July 19, at Galloway & Sons Funeral Home in Three Rivers, Texas.
The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 20, at the same location with Mr. Eric Smith officiating. Burial will follow in the Three Rivers Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Jeff James, Charlie Smith, Marvin Smith Jr., Ray Smith, Scott Smith, Dale Ward.
