Morton Leibowitz Obituary

Morton "Morty" Leibowitz Morton "Morty" Joseph Leibowitz passed away at his home in Fredericksburg, Virginia on Tuesday, June 6, 2023 surrounded by his wife and daughter, Tandy and Molly Leibowitz, and sister Laurel Perton. Diagnosed with Stage 4 Metastatic Melanoma Lung Cancer in March 2023, he made sure to see all his close friends and loved ones, attended weekly poker nights and visited the MGM casino one last time before passing away.

Morty attended the prestigious Brooklyn Tech High School, followed by John Jay College of Criminal Justice and then Sam Houston State University for graduate work. After graduation in 1972, he then spent the next decade working as a cop and in probation and parole in a variety of states, including New York, Indiana and Virginia. In 1988, he became Captain of the Stafford County, VA Jail and then in 1990 became the Superintendent of the Rappahannock Regional Jail. He was honored with the Superintendent of the Year award in 1993 by the American Jail Association.

After retiring from the Rappahannock Regional Jail in 1998, he decided to spend quality time with his family and eventually bought a second home in Tucson, Arizona to be near his daughter Molly. He was a favorite amongst her friends, even hosting annual Super Bowl parties. Having always loved dogs growing up, Morty adopted a Greyhound named Ginger and often took her to the local dog park where he met his closest Arizona friends.

Morty loved playing poker, often taking frequent trips to Las Vegas with family and friends. He also had a passion for horses starting from an early age, both riding them and handicapping horse races. He also enjoyed going out to dinner and trying interesting foods, and more often than not would order one of every dessert due to his enormous sweet tooth.

He is survived by his wife Tandy Leibowitz, daughter Molly Leibowitz, sister Laurel Perton, sister Chloe Leibowitz, and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services are 11:00 AM on Friday, June 9 at Orland's Ewing Memorial Chapel, 1534 Pennington Road, Ewing, NJ. For the link to view the service livestream visit OrlandsMemorialChapel.com/morton-leibowitz/. Burial will follow in Princeton Cemetery, 29 Greenview Avenue, Princeton, NJ.

I was just listening to The Band and was thinking about Morty who introduced me to them while in college together at Sam Houston State University. I wanted to thank him and just became aware of his passing. After graduate school he came and moved in with me while I set up a master of science program at UE in Evansville. I was with him when he won a trifecta at the local race track. We shared to remarkable times together. He was a one of kind energetic friend. His memory is a blessing.
My belated condolences to his family.

Mr. Leibowitz "Morty" was the Superintendent of the Rappahannock Regional Jail when I began working there in 1991 - he started out as my Boss and over the years turned into one of my dearest friends. My journey took me away from Virginia in 2000 ... but Morty has always remained in my mind and heart. I respected him greatly - he was kind and generous to not only me, but my family (even my own parents, who have both now passed, grew to love him!). My heart will forever be grateful for his kindness, support and friendship ~ he was an amazing man and I am honored to have known him. My heart goes out to Mrs. Leibowitz and his beautiful daughter Molly; I am sure that their hearts are broken. I believe in Heaven, with every fiber of my being, and I know I will see Morty again, and I will run to him and hug him exclaiming "it's good to see you again my dear friend"! So until that time ... I will remember you, always, with deep love and lasting affection. My deepest condolences, Nancy Mugnolo

My deepest condolences to Tandy, Molly and family. Morty was a wonderful friend and poker buddy, who had a wonderful sense of humor. We enjoyed many great dinners together, and yes, he loved dessert. I will miss him dearly.

So sorry to hear. I thought of Morty just last week as I passed by the Rappahannock Regional Jail site. As a bail bondsman during Morty's tenure at RRJ, I interacted with Morty on a regular basis. We discovered that we had both been raised in Brooklyn around the same time and we shared an avid interest in horse racing, leading to many enjoyable conversations. Gone too soon. My sincere condolences to wife Tandy and family. RIP, Morty.
