We were so blessed to live in a community that supported us when Mya was born with her many health complications, and we are still blessed with the same community when we are laying her to rest.
Mya Rachelle Cahoy was born August 4th, 2011 to Mark and Kris (Mensch) Cahoy and passed away September 30, 2025, at Avera McKennan, where her poor heart was not strong enough to help fight back the viral infection that took her life.
Mya was born with a heart condition called Tetralogy of Fallot in Sioux Fall, SD at Avera McKennan and was air lifted to Chicago Rush Hospital for surgery to repair her heart. She was blessed to join her older brother Haden and older sister Erica. She was the pride and joy to her grammies, Fran and Marilyn. Also blessed to share her life were Papa Lyle and Uncle Korey, who saw her almost every day. The rest of her aunts, uncles, and cousins were sources of fun, playing Mario Cart, Just Dance, Old Maid, Uno and other games to make Mya laugh and say "oh no" when someone lost or messed up the game. Everyone who came into contact with Mya would get a shy smile from behind one of her parent's backs and a knuckle bump. She attended Avon School where the staff, students, and her 8th grade class supported her by including her in the classroom, games, and activities. Early in life, Mya was diagnosed with Autism and then later diagnosed with a rare genetic disorder called Mowat-Wilson Syndrome. Even with all these health complications to her life, Mya was always smiling, with an easy-going personality, and always wanting to go do things. She loved going on Uncle Korey's pontoon to swim in the river, running for blue slushies, and going to Walmart shopping. Her Fun Friday was calling for A-1 chicken strips and French fries. She loved going to Sioux Falls for her doctors' visits because she knew she would get to go shopping at Target, eat at Taco John's, and buy books from Barnes and Noble. She loved going to the zoo, water parks, and movies. She loved books, coloring, small Disney figurines, and Finding Nemo, the Navajo version. But her favorite things to do were driving around Avon, watching fire trucks, getting popcorn and a pop at Pirate Sports, and playing with her kitty Angela on her phone. Even though we only had her for 14 years, she was a ray of sunshine for so many. Her life may have been small compared to others, but it was her best life.
Mya is survived by her parents and siblings, Mark, Kris, Haden, and Erica Cahoy of Avon, Grandmas Marilyn and Loila, Aunties Kim, Kate, Amy, Jean, and Tammy; her Uncles Jeff, Korey, Kent, Mark, Jason, and Shannon; and cousins Nate, Kallie, Leah, Sam, and Kenzie; and her beloved family cat Tipsy. Mya was preceded in death by her Grammy Fran, Papa Lyle, and Grandpa Ray.
