Myron "Mike" A. Shulfer, of Plover, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his family, on May 30, 2024, at the age of 82.
Mike was born on April 29, 1942 in the Town of Stockton; son of the late Elbert and Alice (Mrochinski) Shulfer. Growing up in the area, he attended St. Mary of Mount Carmel Catholic School and graduated from Amherst High School in 1960.
After graduation, Mike had intended to join the Army National Guard of Wisconsin. However, due to the death of his father, he made the prudent decision to stay home and run the family farm until 1967. In this time, he met Jeanette Liss and the two were married on May 18, 1963 in Stevens Point. Mike and Jeaneatte put down roots for their family in Plover and spent 42 years as husband and wife, until Jeanette's passing in 2006.
After running the family farm, Mike went on to work for Kurzewski Distributing, Package Boiler, Morning Glory Dairy, and the Portage County Highway Department. In 1976, while working for Morning Glory Dairy, he simultaneously started a business, Shulfer's Sprinklers and Landscaping. In 1991, he was able to retire from the highway department and work full-time at Shulfer's. He was proud to work alongside his sons at what became a family-run business and did so until his retirement in 2017.
Being in the landscaping business was the perfect avenue for Mike to enjoy one of his favorite places; the outdoors. He enjoyed spending time outside whether it was watching or participating in a variety of sports. Some of his favorite pastimes included golfing, playing softball, watching a ballgame, or even fishing and hunting. In fact, every November, he looked forward to that time in the woods, hunting with his brothers, sons, and grandsons. Mike also dedicated 10 years to coaching for the Plover Whiting Youth Athletics program while his children played on baseball and softball teams. Once his grandchildren were in sports, he was sure to attend their games and cheer them on, rarely missing a game. Of course, Mike was also an avid fan of all Wisconsin teams; Badgers, Brewers, Bucks and Packers.
After retirement, Mike looked forward to his morning get-togethers with his brothers and friends at South Point Restaurant for coffee and breakfast. While age slowed him down a bit, he still found ways to enjoy sports, spending time watching games on the television as well as old westerns and game shows.
Mike is survived by his children, Renee (John) Oestreich, Chris (Liane) Shulfer, Shelley (Philip) Kubesh, and Keith (Leah) Shulfer; 8 grandchildren, Megan (Cody) Fox, Sean Shulfer, Seth Shulfer, Kyle Woyak, Sydnee Woyak, Collin (Jaime) Klemm, Abby Klemm, and Sophia Shulfer; and 2 great-grandchildren, Charlotte Fox and Amelia Klemm. He is further survived by a brother, Ronald; two sisters, Maxine King and Shirley (Deloyd) Slowinski; and many brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces, and nephews.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents, Elbert and Alice; his wife, Jeanette; his twin brother, Maynard; his in-laws, Adolph and Helen; brothers-in-law, Bob King and Stanley Wysocki; sister-in-law, Carol (nee Patoka) Shulfer; and a nephew, Jerry King.
For those wishing to express their sympathies, the family kindly suggests in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the family to be used for a memorial to be established at a later date.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Compassus Home Hospice and the staff at Home Instead, for the wonderful care given to Mike and his family.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, June 6, 2024, at St. Bronislava Catholic Church - 3200 Plover Road, Plover, WI. Rev. Jeffrey Hennes will officiate. Friends and family are invited to gather and share memories at the church from 9:00 AM until the time of service. Burial will follow at the parish cemetery.
