Nancy Berrett Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Leavitt's Mortuary & Aultorest Memorial Park on Jan. 7, 2026.
Nancy Lee Berrett
Nancy Lee Berrett passed peacefully through the veil to heaven in her sleep on January 4th, 2026, at the age of 81 years old. She lived a full life of service and maternal love.
Nancy was born in Los Angeles, California in September 1944. She graduated high school in San Mateo, California in 1962 where she was a cheerleader and ran track in her moccasins because she said they were more comfortable and let her run faster. From there, her family moved to Hawaii as her father was a United States Marine and lived in military housing near Eva "White" Beach, southwest of Pearl Harbor in a little community near a beautiful beach. She attended the Church College of Hawaii, currently known as BYU-Hawaii, and earned an Associate Degree in Liberal Arts. Nancy was the very first Homecoming Queen of BYU-Hawaii, and her name and trophy are still displayed on campus. While attending a church student institute gathering, she met her forever husband Melvin Victor "Vic" Berrett. He was with his best friend when she entered the room with a handsome lifeguard as her date for the night. Nancy's eyes scanned the room and noticed Vic, who was in the Navy, to which she later recounted as being told by the Holy Spirit that he was to be her husband. Of course, she said, "Are you kidding me? That guy?" because he was not the dashing lifeguard. Regardless, they began dating and while sitting in a convertible on the beach overlooking the water, stars, and Diamond Head at night just talking, Vic was not wise enough to think before he spoke and hypothetically asked her what she would say if he asked her to marry him. Immediately she said yes, she will, to his chagrin. Needless to say, the ride home that evening was exciting for her and mind-boggling for Vic. They were later civilly married in August 1963, just before Vic departed on a Naval deployment. Upon Vic's return from deployment, they were sealed for time and all eternity in January 1964 in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints Laie Temple on the north side of Oahu. She would support her husband through his college days and have her first three children, Matthew Victor Berrett, Wendy Sue Berrett (Kennedy), and Jared Lee Berrett. Adam Wade Berrett was born later when she lived in Portales, New Mexico. Nancy was the epitome of a homemaker. She could make, create, or cater to any situation. Oftentimes, she was called the Martha Stewart of her generation. Everything was made from scratch, and nothing was beneath her amazing talents. Many of her baked goods won several awards at local fairs. She served in multiple callings in the Church, from Relief Society President to Primary Worker; all with a sincere desire to serve the Lord. Nancy studied multiple faiths and denominations during a point in her life when she needed to know which faith was correct; and she chose to strengthen her testimony of the truthfulness of the Gospel of Jesus Christ in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Later in life, Nancy and Vic served a senior couples' mission in San Diego, California as military liaisons to the young Marines there. They loved her baked beans and joyful demeanor every week while ministering to them, and she made lasting impressions of all she served. Nancy was a wonderful example of someone who cared deeply for others. Her time in this world brings her family peace knowing she did everything she could to be a good person not only for them, but for her friends and those she could serve. She remained a faithful daughter and servant to her Heavenly Father throughout her life. Nancy will be missed, but we know she is much happier and free of worldly constraints now that she is in heaven again. We have been sincerely blessed and grateful to be a part of her life here and look forward to being reconnected with love in the next.
Nancy is survived by her brother, George Howard Mabie; her sister, Elizabeth E. "Betty" Mabie (Kolsen); her children Matthew Victor Berrett (Rebecca), Wendy Sue Kennedy, Jared Lee Berrett (Kristy), and Adam Wade Berrett (Jessica). She has 13 grandchildren, and 5 great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents, Howard Lee Mabie and Marion Mildred Morgan Mabie; her husband Melvin Victor "Vic" Berrett; and 4 little souls who gained bodies but didn't live in our world (two of which were twins).
Nancy has requested her departure from earth to celebrated at a graveside service with family and close friends. It will take place on Friday, January 9th at 2:00pm at Leavitt Mortuary & Aultorest Memorial Park, 836 36th Street, Ogden, Utah 84403.
