Winsted- Nancy Bassett Campbell, 89, passed away Monday, August 4, 2025, at her home following a period of declining health. She is survived by her children: Belinda Labourdette & husband Peter of Dover, NH, Andy Campbell & wife Kathy Ann of Winsted, CT, Cooper Lloyd & husband Jimmy of Winsted, CT, Carrie Campbell & husband Simon Pritikin of Shoreline, WA; grandchildren: Nicky Labourdette, Jerrica Pierce, Alex & Connor Campbell, and Jasmine & Olivia Pritikin; great grandson Gage Pierce; and extended family. She was predeceased by her sister, Ruth B. Knight.
Mrs. Campbell was born in Burlington, VT, on July 17, 1936, daughter of the late Raymond E. and Alice (Dodge) Bassett and a resident of CT for over 50 years. She was a proud graduate of Boston University and their then-affiliate, Massachusetts General Hospital School of Nursing, with a BS in Nursing later earning her MBA from RPI Hartford Graduate School. She was a stay-at-home mom for a number of years enjoying bridge, tennis, the League of Women Voters, and Toastmasters. Returning to work her registered nursing career provided many opportunities including community health nursing in New Haven, CT; staff nursing at hospital and rehabilitation facilities; serving as Executive Director for the Connecticut Nurses Association where she was proud of her contribution to contract negotiations and advancing various nursing profession discussions. However, the nursing she enjoyed the most was psych nursing, working for decades at and retiring from the UCONN Health inpatient facility. Her compassion, humor, and genuine interest in people served her well in this capacity.
Mrs. Campbell enjoyed her retirement spending time golfing, wintering in Florida, cooking new recipes, staying in touch with family and friends, reading, following UCONN men's and women's basketball, and playing bridge. She was passionate about bridge. She studied conventions and worked at her game playing as often as possible both on-line and in person. It was her fondest wish that her children or grandchildren would learn to enjoy the game and one of her greatest losses was when she could no longer play.
Mrs. Campbell was a long-time participant in the Nurses Health Study, considered one of the most significant women's health studies funded by the National Institute of Health, as well as the Yale University School of Medicine Alzheimer's Disease Research Center S.P.E.B. and observational studies, donating her brain for medical research.
The family would like to thank the Hartford Bridge Club community that provided so much joy; Dr. Menoutis, her UCONN medical team, and the medical staff of multiple hospitals and rehabilitation facilities for their kind and caring support, and finally, Brighton Hospice-Connecticut especially Raegan, Haley, and Kasia for their compassionate care and support of mom and our family in the final days.
Calling hours will be held Monday, August 11, 2025, from 4:00 until 6:00p.m. followed by a brief service at 6:00p.m. at Gleeson-Ryan Funeral Home, 258 Prospect St., Torrington.
