Nancy Bowman Chewning, known to her loved ones as “Nanny”, 90, of Newport, passed away on Friday, August 8, 2025, at home with her children by her side.

Nancy & her late husband, Nelson raised their four children in Clarksville, VA where she worked in retail & banking. Together they owned & operated N&N video which led them to Salter Path, NC, where she later retired from the IGA store.

Nancy treasured her family and friends, and she welcomed everyone with open arms. She was sweet, kind, loving, and put a smile on everyone’s face. She enjoyed cross stitching, gardening, quilting, and reading. Nancy loved family gatherings, traveling, and walking on the beach finding seashells with Nelson.

She is survived by her three children: Wanda Carroll (late Donnie), Nelson Bradley Chewning, and Barry Chewning (Barbara Jean), and daughter-in-law, Ruth Parker (late Joseph Scott) all of Newport NC; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and her faithful dog companion, Missy.

Nancy was preceded in death by her husband, Nelson Chewning; son, Joseph Scott Chewning; siblings, Claude Cecil Bowman Sr. and Gladys Bowman Ahmuty; as well as her parents, Claude Sewell Bowman and Louise Jones Bowman.

A special thank you to Gentiva Hospice for the wonderful care given to Nancy and her family.
