Nancy Gooding Obituary
Nancy Lee (Sheppard) Gooding, 92, of Oak Island, NC, died on Sunday, July 21, 2024, at the Forest Ridge Senior Living and Rehabilitation in Woodland Park, CO. She was born on August 14,1931 in Columbus, Ohio, to Howard M. and Lenore (Willoughby) Sheppard. She was a graduate of West High School and attended Capital University. She was employed by City National Bank and was a member of Glenwood United Methodist Church. She was active in the Girl Scouts of America as a troop leader, troop adviser, service unit director, and member of the Seal of Ohio Council. After moving to St. Albans, WV, in 1973, she was employed as a bookkeeper by Newbrough Photography and became a member of Lakewood United Methodist Church, where she was active in the choir and the United Methodist Women. She also served as District Treasurer and Spiritual Growth Coordinator for the Charleston (WV) District United Methodist Women. She graduated from West Virginia State University in 1985 with a B.S. in Business Administration/Accounting. After moving to Oak Island in 1989, Nancy was employed by J. A. Dosher Memorial Hospital as Director of Human Resources until her retirement in 1998. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Southport, NC, where she was active in the choir, and served as the church treasurer, United Methodist Women's Circle Leader, Sunday School teacher, and delegate to the Annual Conference of the North Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church. She also served as the district treasurer of the Wilmington (NC) District United Methodist Women. In addition, she was also a long-time member of the Sea Notes Choral Society.
She was predeceased by Ronald L. Gooding, her husband of almost 54 years, her parents, and her sister and brother-in-law, Genieva and Bowman Turner. She is survived by her son, Craig Gooding of Green Mountain Falls, CO, her daughter and son-in-law, Deborah and Jay Thiessen of Chelsea, AL, and her son, Kevin Gooding, of Morgantown, WV. She is also survived by grandchildren Rachel (Rebekah) Schnaubelt, Erica and Melissa Gooding; Jennifer (Brad) Stewart, John (Blake) Thiessen; Colin, Catherine, and Rebekah Gooding, great-granddaughter, Lucia Thiessen, nieces Beverly Bourbeau of Glendale, AZ, and Carol (Steve) Ryerson of Murray, KY, and grand-nephews, Thomas (Chelsea) and David (Julie) Ryerson.
A memorial service and interment will be held at Trinity United Methodist Church in Southport, NC, at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, her family requests donations be made in her memory to one of the following organizations: Trinity UMC General Fund (209 E Nash St, Southport, NC 28461), the Sea Notes Choral Society (810 McKay Rd SE, Bolivia NC., 28422), or the Eastern North Carolina Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association (Alzheimer's Association Eastern North Carolina Chapter, 5171 Glenwood Ave Suite 101, Raleigh, NC 27612).
Nancy's family would like to express their deepest appreciation to the members of Trinity United Methodist Church, Mom's dear neighbors on NE 38th St., and the doctors, nurses, and staffs of UCHealth Memorial Hospital Central, Compassus Hospice, and Forest Ridge Senior Living for their love, care, and support.
