Obituary of Nancy E. Hitzfield
Nancy E. Hitzfield, 86, of Petersburg, KY, passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, January 17, 2024. Nancy was born in Cincinnati, OH, on March 9, 1937, to Newton and Lillian {Bennett} Sullivan.
Nancy grew up in Burlington, KY, and graduated in the very first class of Boone County High School in 1955. After graduating high school, she went on to attend business school and obtained her first job at Florence Deposit Bank working in the accounting department where she met JoAnn {Nussbaum} Hitzfield who introduced her to her future husband, William L. Hitzfield. Nancy and William got married on October 14, 1962, moved to Petersburg, KY, and built their home on the farm where Nancy resided until her death.
Nancy joined Petersburg Christian Church and was a Sunday School teacher there for over 40 years. Nancy was always an active parent for her children; at Petersburg Elementary School she became a Cub Scout Leader, was later elected president of the PTA, and then went on to work in the cafeteria. Nancy obtained a cafeteria position with Boone County Public Schools, where she worked at Petersburg Elementary until it had closed and then at Kelly Elementary School after its opening until her retirement 27 years later.
In her spare time, Nancy loved traveling, going to Las Vegas with her girlfriends every year, Hawaii, Washington State, Maine, Cape Cod, MA, and British Columbia, Canada. She was an avid reader, having read the bible from start to finish four times. But what Nancy loved most of all was her Lord and Savior and her beloved family.
She will be greatly missed by her children Rosemary (Paul) Mastin and Michael D. Hitzfield; four grandchildren Dale (fiancée Brooke Bailey) Mastin, Brent Mastin, Collin Hitzfield, and Kathryn Hitzfield; nephews Tim (Lori) Hitzfield, Dan (Mary) Hitzfield and Joe (Tina) Hitzfield; and three very good friends Cinda Louden, Mary Lainhart, and Ashley Hager.
In addition to her parents, Nancy was preceded in death by her husband William L. Hitzfield, brother in-law Frank Hitzfield, and sister-in-law JoAnn Hitzfield.
The months leading up to her death, Nancy received excellent care with St. Elizabeth Hospice. The family gives a special thank you to the entire staff.
A visitation will be held between 10 AM and 11:30 AM with the funeral service to immediately follow at 11:30 AM on Thursday, January 25 at Petersburg Christian Church, 6561 Tanner St., Petersburg, KY 41080. Nancy will be laid to rest at Burlington Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Petersburg Christian Church sent to the address listed above.
