Nancy Hornstein Obituary

Hornstein, Nancy V.

June 19, 1942 - May 25, 2023

Loving mother of three and known as "Nanny" to her four grandchildren, Nancy passed away peacefully surrounded by her children at Methodist Hospital on May 25, 2023.

Preceded in death by her husband, Bennett Hornstein; and parents, Sally and Abe Venger of Omaha. Survived by daughters: Jill Goldstein (Joe) of Omaha and their sons Jack and Alex; and Beth Hornstein of Denver, CO and Joe Hornstein (Erin) of Cherry Hills Village, CO and their son Bennett and daughter Elliot; sister, Enid (Steve) Wenner of Greenwood Village, CO; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Nancy was born and raised in Omaha. She graduated from Central High School in Omaha and attended the University of Oklahoma in Norman, OK. After attending college, she was selected to be a princess at the Aksarben Ball. She married Bennett in 1963, and they briefly lived in Berkeley, CA while Bennett attended law school at Boalt Hall, University of California-Berkley. They then moved back to Omaha to start a family.

Nancy had a passion for community service, participating in the Junior League of Omaha, on the Omaha Symphony Debutante Ball Committee, and with the Child Savings Institute, the National Council of Jewish Women, and many more. After Bennett passed away in 1986, she began a remarkable career as a salesperson at Borsheims Jewelry Store in Omaha, where people throughout the area and country appreciated her friendly and welcoming demeanor and her boundless energy. Her myriad of clients came to rely on her expertise and honesty as she helped them celebrate their cherished milestones and joyous occasions (never revealing the pending engagements or surprise gifts). After working at Borsheims for 33 years, she settled into a much-deserved retirement, enjoying spending time with her family and friends. Through all these years, she never met a stranger. She was genuinely interested in and cared about everyone she knew and met. She was a bright and energetic light and touched so many lives. Her kindness and zest for life will be deeply missed.

MEMORIAL SERVICE: Tuesday, May 30th, 11am at Temple Israel, 13111 Sterling Ridge Drive. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Child Saving Institute, Project Harmony, or the Bennett G. Hornstein Endowment Fund.

Nancy was so special to me and always kind and overly helpful the years we worked together at Borsheims. If you worked at Borsheims you know she made the best chocolate chip cookies and often had a basket filled for everyone to enjoy. She did tell me her secret recipe that I still use today. I'm glad I saw you recently Nancy. You hold a special place in my heart!! Thinking of you Jill and Joe.
