Nancy Newman
July 28, 1939 - July 30, 2025
Nancy Newman, a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully two days after her 86th birthday at Jersey Shore University Medical Center - the same hospital where she was born and worked for over 30 years.
Nancy spent her life caring for others both personally and professionally. After having both of her children at 24 and 28 years old, she worked many jobs in addition to raising them. However, it wasn't until she spent an extended period of time in the hospital for a stomach illness where she developed an interest in the medical field. When she was in her mid-thirties, she put herself through school to become a respiratory therapist. Soon after, she started at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, where her compassion, expertise, and tireless work ethic left a lasting impression on patients and colleagues alike. Even in her later years, Nancy remained deeply connected to her profession. During her own hospital stays, she would often share stories from her years in the field with younger healthcare professionals - offering wisdom, humor, and encouragement. The family would like to express gratitude to all of her doctors, nurses, and other medical staff at Jersey Shore for their generous care.
Nancy was the child of Hazel and Paul Buhler, who raised her in Belmar, NJ alongside her sister, Dolores Ballard. Her parents later moved to Manasquan, just a few blocks away from the house their daughter Nancy built in the late 60s. Nancy proudly raised her two daughters, Kelly Long and Wendy Newman, in that home where years later, she continued to live as her son-in-law, James Long, moved in and her granddaughter Haley Woszczak was born. In that same home, she hosted countless gatherings of friends to play Mahjong, a game that became a cherished tradition of hers for over 60 years. Her presence in her home was a constant source of comfort and strength to her family as they lived closely throughout her life.
Nancy's legacy continues through her daughters, Kelly and Wendy, Kelly's husband Jim and their daughter Haley, Haley's husband Josh Woszczak, and their two children Riley and Weston, as well as Nancy's sister Dodi and her children Allison and Douglas. Being a mother, and especially a grandmother and great-grandmother always brought her immense joy. Nancy was a pillar of strength and love in her family, known for her resilience, warmth and unwavering support. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her but the generations she nurtured and friends and family she cherished will always hold her fierce spirit close.
A private mass will be held in her honor at St. Denis Church.
Services are entrusted to Jersey Shore Cremation Service, 43 Taylor Avenue, Manasquan, NJ.
