Thompson Harveson & Cole Funeral Home & CrematoryNancy Lou Shulkey Salmon, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, and dear friend to many, passed away in Fort Worth, Texas on March 9, 2026.
Born in Alvord, Texas on February 15, 1924 to parents Johnnie Mae Rice Shulkey and Bruce Clarence Shulkey, she also lived in Olney and Borger before moving to Fort Worth in 1935. Before that, she traveled extensively with her parents, including a 1933 excursion to Chicago (with a visit to the World’s Fair where she entered the Heinz pickle factory, got a silk handkerchief from the Japanese exhibit, and made a ceramic tray with her initials) and a 1934 trip to New York City (where she stayed with her parents at an apartment near the Hudson River while her father attended Columbia University and also rode on a roller coaster on Coney Island with her mother).
She married Theodore “Ted” Campbell Salmon in 1943 and lived with him in Wilmington NC and Detroit MI before moving to Fort Worth in 1945. She gave birth to three children, Carol Annette Salmon, Bruce Campbell Salmon, and John Cameron Salmon.
Nancy received her bachelor’s degree from Texas Christian University in 1949. She and her husband Ted took many summer trips with their family, including multiple visits to California (Ted’s home), the 1964 World’s Fair in New York where they discovered delicious Belgian waffles and went to a taping of the television show “What’s My Line?,” and Wisconsin in 1965 where they rented a cabin next to a lake where the children learned how to cast a fishing rod.
Ted and Nancy continued to travel throughout their 62-year marriage, including 1980 and 1988 trips to Spain, a 1998 excursion to Italy and the French Riviera, and a 2005 trek to Poland.
Ted and Nancy were devoted attendees of the Fort Worth Symphony and supporters of the Van Cliburn Competition, hosting contestants in 1966, 1973, and 1977. They also attended golf tournaments at Colonial Country Club. In 1976, Ted Salmon, as president of Colonial Country Club, presented the winning trophy to Lee Trevino, photographed and displayed at Colonial Country Club. They encouraged and deeply supported their children’s education, continuing the devotion to education illustrated by her father Bruce Shulkey (1894-1958), former assistant superintendent of elementary schools in the Fort Worth Independent School District, for whom the Bruce Shulkey Elementary School is named. She was a constant supporter of many community organizations, including Meals on Wheels which gave her a Dedicated Volunteer Service award for 30 years of service.
She always emboldened her children to explore various cultures and cuisines. The family often dined at Jimmy Dip’s Cantonese restaurant, Pulido’s Mexican restaurant, and Carshon’s kosher deli. As a cook herself, Nancy was honored to continue her mother’s famous recipe for buttermilk cake.
She was preceded in death by her husband Ted and daughter Carol. She is survived by her son, Bruce and wife Linda of Bowie, MD; son, John and wife, Mari Pino, of Summerfield, NC; grandchildren, Tracy McNeese of Frisco, TX, Leslie Zvitt of Fort Worth, TX, Amy of Springfield, IL, and Marc and his wife Stacey of Los Angeles, CA, Mirabel Salmon of Chicago, IL, and Lydia Salmon of Charlotte, NC; great grandchildren Ian, Alec, Megan, Gabe, Claudia, and Ford; niece Emily Campbell of Cayucos, CA; first cousin once removed Susan Collier of Arlington, TX; and close friend and neighbor Sandra Wallace.
Nancy joined Broadway Baptist Church in 1935 and was an active member most of the rest of her life.
A Memorial Service to celebrate Nancy’s life will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, March 21, 2026 at Broadway Baptist Church, 305 W Broadway Ave, Fort Worth TX 76104.
