Nancy Smith Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Brockett Funeral Home on Jan. 17, 2026.
Nancy Bryant Smith, age 82, passed away peacefully on January 14, 2026, in Southampton, New York.

Born on June 9, 1943, in Summit, New Jersey, Nancy was the daughter of Knox Belyea and Amy Bryant Watson of Westfield and then Far Hills. She began her education at The Gill School in Bernardsville and continued her academic journey at Briarcliff College before earning her bachelor's degree from Fairleigh Dickinson University. Her pursuit of knowledge reflected a lifelong curiosity and commitment to personal growth.

For 63 years, Nancy shared a devoted marriage with her beloved husband, James Spear Smith. Together, they built a life rooted in love and mutual respect. Their enduring partnership was a testament to their deep bond and shared values.

Nancy was the proud mother of Jennifer of Lincoln, Vermont, and Steven and his wife Dana of Mendham, New Jersey. Her family was the center of her world, and she found immense joy in creating lasting memories with her seven grandchildren. Whether spending quiet afternoons playing games, lively days beachcombing along the shore, or swimming in the waters around Nantucket and Sag Harbor, Nancy cherished every moment with them.

Nancy's presence brought joy to those around her. She leaves behind her husband James, her children, grandchildren, brother-in-law David, his wife Sally and their families. Nancy created a lifelong circle of close friends from the Gill School in Bernardsville, twenty-five years as a realtor, and her quilter's group in Basking Ridge, a decade at the Four Seasons at Bridgewater, and thirty years of summers spent in Sag Harbor.

Her passions were as vibrant as her spirit. A gifted gardener and skilled quilter, Nancy found beauty in both nature and craft. She delighted in sailing and being near the water-places where she felt most at peace. Her home was often filled with warmth: the scent of flowers from her garden, the soft textures of handmade quilts, and the laughter of loved ones gathered close.

At Nancy's request, no services will be held. Her remains will stay with her husband so that they may be dispersed together. May Nancy's memory bring comfort to all who knew her and continue to inspire love, kindness, and grace in the lives she touched. In lieu of flowers, please feel free to donate to a charity of your choice on her behalf.

Nancy you will be missed by so many. We enjoyed your company on the many bike trips you took with the Cashions and us. You always had a smile on your face.
