Bartholomew Thomas (Bart) Dixon, 79, of
Southampton, NY, passed away on January 11, 2026 in Southampton.
Bart was born in
Brooklyn, NY to Gertrude and Harold Dixon on April 20, 1946. He graduated from Xavier High School in Manhattan in 1963 and went on to earn a bachelor's degree in accounting from Mount Saint Mary's College in
Emmitsburg, MD in 1967. He enlisted in the Navy after college, attending Officer Candidate School and Air Intelligence School in
Pensacola, FL and
Alameda, CA. Bart served as a Lieutenant Junior Grade in the Navy's Helicopter Combat Support Squadron Seven (HC-7), 110th Detachment, during the Vietnam War, a unit that provided combat search and rescue missions for downed pilots. In 1969, while on leave, he returned to the States to marry his college sweetheart, Phyllis D'Alessio, after which they moved to Atsugi, Japan, where his unit was stationed during the war. Upon returning from overseas, he worked for over 30 years for New York Telephone (and its subsequent incarnations, Bell Atlantic, Nynex and Verizon). He retired from Verizon as the director of corporate accounting in 2001.
Bart's greatest joy in life was spending time with his large immediate and extended family and his Cooper's Beach friends–especially around the holidays and for special celebrations. His retirement in Southampton revolved around his favorite activities: daily visits to Tate's Bakery, reading the New York Times cover to cover, spending every nice day he could at Cooper's, listening to or watching his beloved (and frustrating) New York Mets, visiting Rogers Memorial Library to read and check out countless books, making annual pilgrimages to St. Martin with Phyllis to escape the cold Long Island winters, traveling into the city to attend opera and theater performances, cooking his favorite New York Times and Mark Bittman recipes, attending regular Mount reunions, and hitting the road to visit his children and grandchildren on both coasts. Blessed with a rapier wit and keen intellect, Bart loved a good laugh and a spirited debate. He was a longtime parishioner of The Basilica Parish of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary in Southampton.
He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Phyllis (D'Alessio) Dixon; his four children and their spouses, Matthew Dixon (Amy), Abigail Zandri (Justin), Michael Dixon (Rachel) and Elizabeth Marathe (Anand); his eight grandchildren, Aidan Dixon, Ethan Dixon, Norah Dixon, Clara Dixon, James Zandri, Tess Zandri, Alexandra Dixon and Hannah Marathe; three sisters, Susan Salustro, Martha Shepard and Clare Klee; and countless in-laws, nieces, nephews and cousins. He is predeceased by his brother and best friend, Gregory Dixon.
A visitation will be held on Wednesday, January 14, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Brockett Funeral Home in Southampton. A Funeral mass will be celebrated on Thursday, January 15 at 10 a.m., at the Basilica Parish of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary in Southampton. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital–an institution that gave Bart an exceptional 11 years of life after his initial cancer diagnosis.
