Nancy Webster Stefanou died peacefully in her home in Wolverine Lake Village, MI on June 1, 2023, at age 86. She was born December 4, 1936 in Fort Wayne, IN the oldest daughter of Donald and Viola Webster and grew up in Monroeville, IN. Nancy was a wonderfully loving wife, mother, Yiayia, sister and friend and is survived by her husband George; daughter Jennifer (Kevin) Curry, son Alex (Terri) Stefanou; grandchildren Nicholas, Michael and Ethan Stefanou, and Kathleen and Norah Curry; and her sister Sandra (Jon) Schmoll. She is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends. Two siblings, James, and Ann, as well as her parents, preceded her in death.
She was a proud Indiana University graduate, majoring in Art, an active member of the IU Tri Delta sorority, 1955 pledge class, and a lifetime supporter of IU basketball. She moved to California after graduation in 1959 to teach in Long Beach, and there she met George. They married in Athens, Greece in 1963, hopping on a freighter to New York City as a four week honeymoon, and would have celebrated their 60th anniversary this July. They both loved to travel and traveled extensively through Europe in the early years of their marriage. They moved several times during their marriage, Long Beach, CA, Pittsburgh, PA, Detroit, MI, Athens, Greece before calling Wolverine Lake Village home. Nancy was a talented artist, and her work graces the homes of friends, relatives, and supporters around the world. She was also a teacher, and spent several years as the director of Walled Lake Schools "New Potentials" alternative high school program. She devoted years to the school and helped many students over that time find their footing. She loved to garden, read, was an avid supporter of the arts and public radio, and above all, enjoyed spending time with family and friends, and will be missed by the many who loved her.
Visitation will be at Lynch and Sons Funeral Home, 340 N. Pontiac Tr, Walled Lake, MI Monday, June 12, 2023, at 10 am, followed by a short service at 11:00. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider donations to the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, DC where she was a founding member, or University of Michigan's NPR station, Michigan Radio.
