John M. Stefanou, 89, passed away February 16, 2026. Born and raised in Norfolk, he attended local schools including Virginia Tech Extension and Old Dominion University (then a division of William and Mary), receiving his degree in structural engineering.

While attending school, he was also attending drill meetings in the U.S. Navy Reserves to fulfill his military obligation. John began his career at Fraoli, Blum, and Yesselman Associates, a local engineering firm, working his way up to managing partner.

He was a lifelong member of the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral and the Men's AHEPA group there. Throughout his life, John enjoyed several trips to Chios, Greece with family and friends.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Barbara T. Stefanou, brother Christopher Stefanou, nephew Marcus Stefanou (Carrie), niece Christina Papakirk (Chris), brother-in-law Rick Thomas, goddaughters Anna Stefanou and Marcie Murphy, as well as numerous extended family members, friends, and his favorite furry companion, Cooper. He was preceeded in death by many family members and dear friends, including his parents, Marcus and Isminie Stefanou.

Funeral services will be held Friday, February 20 at 11 a.m. at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral with a Trisagion Prayer Service conducted immediately before the funeral.

Donations in his memory can be made to the AHEPA Scholarship Fund and/or the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral at 7022 Granby St., Norfolk, VA, 23505.
