Nancy Jo Sulz of Central Lake passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 2, 2025, surrounded by her loving family. She was born on May 29, 1952, in Bellaire, Michigan, to Lynn and Suzanne (Purdy) Gibbard. A lifelong resident of Antrim County, Nancy had a heart of gold and was always devoted to helping others.
For many years, Nancy owned and operated an adult foster care home, providing care for individuals with severe mental disabilities. After retiring from that role, she worked as a Special Education Para Pro at Central Lake Public Schools, where she worked with middle and high school students. She adored all her students and truly had a passion for supporting individuals with special needs.
Nancy’s vibrant personality and infectious laugh made her the life of every gathering. She cherished time spent with her close-knit group of girlfriends and family. She was a dedicated Detroit Lions fan, enjoyed attending her friends’ lively parties, going camping with family, and most of all, creating special memories with her grandchildren. Movie night parties at her home were a highlight for them.
She is survived by her daughters, Hannah Gregory and Victoria Sulz, both of Central Lake, and their fiancés, Jesse Manley and Derick Graczyk, also of Central Lake; grandchildren, Liam Weber and Ava Sulz-Clark, both of Central Lake; brother, Michael (Laila Riley) Gibbard of Antelope, CA; nieces and nephews, Luke (Jen) Buffman, Max (Gayle) Gibbard, Michelle Mashburn; several great-nieces and nephews; and her beloved cats Mae Mae the Bae Bae and Little Man . Nancy was preceded in death by her cherished sister, Janice Buffman; nephew, Tim Buffman; and her parents.
A funeral service will be held on Monday, March 10, at 5 p.m. at the First Congregational Church in Central Lake, with Pastor Gary Bekkering officiating. The family will greet friends from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., followed by a luncheon downstairs in the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Antrim County Animal Shelter, 4660 S. M-88 Highway, Bellaire, MI 49615.
