When I think of Nathan Sr, I will always think of an open door.
I was blessed to meet Sr. when he hired me into his Land Surveying firm in my early 20s. I had (rather boldly) answered an ad for a Crew Chief position which he seemingly humored just long enough to induce a sense of easiness during the interview process before tactfully shifting gears by asking me if I thought I’d be more qualified to lead a Crew than the gentleman who had just applied for the position ahead of me, and who had been surveying longer than I’d been alive.
His point was fairly taken and I signed up to work on the more experienced gentlemen’s Crew. I’m glad to have listened to Sr.’s sagely administered guidance at that time as I’m certain it spared all parties concerned many troubles. Through those years before his retirement (as long as we exhibited a determination to improve), his fatherly and long suffering predisposition seemed to never waver towards his Associates despite our frequent missteps along the way. His corrections, though at times biting, were always laced with constructive and edifying instruction, his judgments always inarguably sound. His kindness, patience, and wisdom will be remembered and appreciated. His charisma and quick humor always a form of encouragement, and his office doorremarkably, always open to everyone.
His legacy continues through his Sons, who like their Father, exhibit those same qualities of thoughtfulness, and wisdom.
