Nathaniel W. "Bill" Gilbert, 84, of Coventry, passed away on Friday, July 18, 2025, at Rhode Island Hospital in Providence.

Born in Madison, Wisconsin, Bill was the son of the late William "Romy" and Lavern (Anderson) Gilbert. After graduating high school, he proudly served in the United States Navy from 1959 to 1963 aboard the USS Searcher during the Vietnam War.

Following his honorable discharge, Bill began a long and successful career with Tasca Automotive Group, where he was Bob Tasca's personal mechanic and eventually retired in 2017 as their respected service manager. A gifted mechanic and innovator, Bill played an integral role in the development of the engine widely used in the Shelby Cobra-an accomplishment that speaks to his passion for performance, precision, and automotive history.

Bill loved working with his hands. Whether under the hood of a car or offering advice to a friend, he found joy in problem-solving and sharing his vast knowledge. He was rarely seen without a dog by his side and is survived by his two loyal Labradors, Lucky and Tar.

He is survived by his three children: Deb Stone and her husband Daryl, David Gilbert, and John Gilbert and his wife Sharon; four grandchildren: Adam and Emma Landroche and Michael and Richard Lamoureux. He also leaves behind his former wife, dear friend, and the mother of his children, Jane Deptula, Ret. USMC.

Calling hours will be held on Thursday, July 24, 2025, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Carpenter-Jenks Funeral Home, 659 East Greenwich Avenue, West Warwick. A funeral service celebrating Bill's life will take place on Friday, July 25 at 12:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial with military honors will follow at Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Exeter.
